Thinking of Buying a SE+ 1.2 HTP - Need Advice

Featured Replies

1 I am thinking of buying a SE+ 1.2 12 valve HTP.

2 I would appreciate advice on what others think about the spec of this car and this engine - it seemed nippy enough to me when I had a test drive. I'm really interested in what owners with this engine achieve for fuel consumption in the real world. I do a mix of motorway and town driving (probably a 50/50 split) and around 10,000 miles per annum although this will drop next year to around 6,000 miles per annum. Advice most welcome, in particular actual consumption figure. Thanks.

As I set out in my original message. Thank you.

Go for a diesel! ;)

Can't give a complete responce as I had the 1.2 HTP in the VW Fox that I chopped in for the Fabia.

The HTP engine is OK and the gearbox in the fox was quite usable and the cable throttle and lightweight ment it would actually make it to 30 in a reasonable time from 30-60 though you were a sitting duck. Motorways at around 70 wasn't the best for ecconomy but manageable.

The Fabia is about the same interior quality maybe a few more rattles in mine though kind of expected with the VRS.

you've edited your original post now.

if it's for general driving the 1.2htp is a great engine, it will cruise comfortably at 70mph but fuel consumption suffers on the motorway at that speed.

The 1.2 HTP 70 is a cracking engine, it's nippy around town and has a great off beat engine sound like a mini-impreza.

Out of our cars it's the one I jump in for town driving or for nipping here and there.

Mpg wize ours averages around 40mpg, but will return over 50mpg on A/B road 120 mile round trip to our caravan.

There is one issue for you though, it's not a great motorway car, yes it will keep up with traffic easily but 70mph+ seriously hurts economy and the engine starts getting a bit boomy. 60-70mph=50mpg. 70-80mph=40mpg

If you can live with sticking to 65-70mph on the motorway then fine but if your a 70-80mph then I'd look at a taller geared car.

Cheers

No rattles in our 3 year old Fabia 2 or new Fabia SE. Maybe the 15" wheels and standard suspension gives the interior trim an easier time.

to be honeset at 70mph it's still very acceptable for what it is. I think you're comparing the fabia to your passat but compared to say a yaris or a fiat grande punto it's much more comfortable.

After giving back my Golf when made redundant, I had to fund my own car for the first time in many years. 2007 Fabia 2, 1.6 petrol(105 bhp) is comfortable, quiet, reliable and 42 mpg. Love it!

Have driven 1.2 TSi- is that what you're thinking about? 105 bhp should be powerful enough.

As a diesel is more expensive new, with the mileage you're doing may well be the dearer option. 1.6 diesel, although quieter than 'old' 1.4 diesel, is still a bit noisier than petrols but you get , maybe, 60 mpg rather than the 45 ish from a petrol. Also check out costs of Road Tax between both fuel types.

Let us know how your thoughts are progressing - you're among Skoda mates here.

The SE+ is a very good spec & the 1.2 12v is a good engine nippy in town & good fuel economy but the 1.2 TSI 86PS is a better engine better fuel economy happy to be in town or on the motorway

I have a lot of experience with 2 1.2HTP cars. My 1st (2004) was/is a quiet peach - the 2nd (2007) is noisy, rubbish performer, poor economy and a Polo I drove was the same.

1.2 HTP engines are really only suitable for town runabouts where they excel. Fuel consumption is disappointing at best and plummets unless you have a feather light foot. Brother in Law has a 2010 latest spec version and confirms that his fuel consumption too is abymsal. Look at 40mpg average when run in. (far less in the early days) If youre in a hurry or on a motorway (very tiring experience) 40mpg will be very difficult to hit.

My advice is pay the extra and buy the 1.2 tsi - its a far superior engine and far more economical to boot.

No more tiresome small cars for me, taking delivery of an Octavia 1.2tsi this week.

Xman is perhaps a little unfair in his advice.

The 1.2 12v engine is fine. it's not gonna be like a 2.0 diesel on the motorway, but it will do the job.

The cost difference between the HTP and the TSi will outweigh the saving in fuel ecomony and the maintainence costs, also the HTP is likely to be more reliable becuase it's SIMPLE.

As a New car proposition i find the 1.2HTP S with the 20% offer a very affordable option.

think about the slightly lower spec and add as extras the one of two things that are must have have for you and you should get a sub 10k car.

My Fabia estate has the 1.2 HTP engine, and I am very impressed with it

I can get 50mpg out of it, but yes, on motorways, anything above 60 and I find and the fuel soon starts going down.

Ok it is a little noisy, but you get used to it, and it certainly has enough power off the line.

I probably would have gone for the larger engine, but I had to have the 1.2 for insurance as I am only 18

Cant comment on the engine, although as others have said if a lot of motorway driving would expect MPG to not be as good as you expect.

Spec on the SE plus is good.

Hopefully this helps.

I do like those little 3 pot's. They make a nice sound actually and very nippy for town driving with a fair bit of grunt to them actually.

As said if you're planning to do lots of motorway driving or like relaxed, fast paced motorway cruising then this engine probably isn't for you.
