K&N or BMC air filter stock replacement ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am planning to change my air filter to a K&N stock replacement one for my 1.8tsi FL Octy, anyone here got this filter & is it better then the oem one?

is it worth the change? any input would be great.

Thanks..

I've had one but now have a green cotton. Can't tell the difference. The thing to watch with these filters is not to over oil them as you'll contaminate your MAF. Don't expect any big power increase either (1 to 2 bhp max). The main advantage is you can re use them.

Hi

I put a K&N in my astravan from new to try to maximise mpg but kept the original oem one as a spare. The original came in handy recently as I put it back in so I had a few days to give me time to clean, dry and re-oil the K&N filter.

If the original filter is ok, keep a hold of it for when you clean the K&N. I cleaned mine at 40,000 miles and it was very dirty so I think I will do it every 20,000 miles - it is worth checking your K&N when the engine oil is changed to make sure it is not ready for a clean.

I don't think there is much difference in performance or MPG so it is only worthwhile getting one if you are planning on keeping the vehicle for a while.

I also have one (DNA filter which is the same but half the cost of K&N) in my motorbike which I have had for nearly 10 years now - I will hopefully have the bike for at least another 10 years.

Cheers

Dave

anyone fit the K&n stock replacement filter on a petrol octy? on k&n website they claim better performance, the thing is the air filters in the octy are the same ones which are fitted in the audi a4 so i guess the oem ones are of good quality :dull:

Thanks..

i am abit confused also with the bmc stock replacement air filter, which you guys recommend k&n or bmc in stock replacement?

Thanks..

to be fair which ever floats your boat. All pretty much the same.

On my fabia I've run greencotton panel filter and BMC CDA and in the Octavia a K&N panel filter. Only had it on for 1000miles so far.

any difference with the k&n panel filter compare to the oem one?

Thanks

Waste of time really. Just adds a little bit more noise - no power difference.

The is a little more of a "growl" at lower revs but its slight. Fuel consuption via trip computer seems slightly better but this could also be to do with the winter wheels.

Only other thing I've noticed (mines DSG) is that its happier in a higher gear at lower revs, it doesn't feel like its "hunting".

Was it worth the money?...........dunno, I'm happy I bought it and I've had it fitted.

What u mean by adding more noise? the turbo gets louder?

Thanks..

You tend to get a bit more of a sucking noise (not as bad as an exposed filter) - drilling your air box with the standard element would do the same
