I've had mine 8 1/2 years (ibiza tdi but almost a fabia) and been tempted to sell it a few times but with all the mods i've done and money spent on it i can't seem to find a replacement that would satisfy my car needs without spending a lot of £££££ so i'm keeping it!

How long do you keep your cars?

Well my Octavia is the first car I really wanted and I planned to keep it 4 to 5 years. Had it 4.5 so far but a change in circumstances will probably force me to part with it as it is costing me too much to keep on the road :(

Prior to that I had a 306 that I kept for 3 years and my first car was a Hyundai Pony that I was given that I kept for 4.5 years.

Never selling the Skoda. It will have been in my possession 8 years in February! (was 3 years old when I bought it)

What I might eventually do is probably turn the fabia into an all-out track only car (essentially stop modding it) and buy something sensible as a daily to suit (tow )

I'll never be selling it as a going concern as simply no-one would pay what I want for it (It's insured for £7,500 alone!)

I`m in this situation. Due to the miles, my car is worth more in bits, and I really couldnt pull it apart as sad as it sounds. So i`ll be doing the same long term as jason.

iv had 9 cars in 4 years, all of which i have sold on not wrote off! i want to keep the octy, when i get bored ill squeeze some more power out of it

1st car was a year, 2nd car was a year, 1st vRS was just over 3 years and this one I plan to keep for at least 3 years hopefully five

3 years. I try to plan my cars in stages.

Wanted the looks - had 3 series beamer x2 within 3 years.

Wanted great economy - fiesta tdci - 3 years.

Wanted more power and economy - fabia vrs - currently 2 years.

Next, want style and power - beamer M5 but will probably end up with an m-sport 5 series diesel.

My last 2 cars have both done 100k before I got rid, and I expect the Yeti to do at least that. At 1.5k a month it won't take long!

Normally around 3 years. Longest was my Rover 75 - 5 years, 171K. Shortest was my last car, an Octavia 4x4 which I had 6 months before trading it in for the Scout. Scout will be kept for 3 years minimum, maybe longer as my partner may have it then & I'll get another.

This thread makes me realise how often I change my cars... :(

The Yeti is a year old, and is going in March for a new one.

The Fabia Greenline II is almost a year old and going in March for a new Yeti too.

The GT-R I've only had for two and a half months.

My 09 plate Fabia VRS diesel, which is a car I really want to keep for some time as it's the last one of it's kind has also only been mine for a little less than a year.

Next year after the Yetis arrive I am determined not to buy any more cars for three years...

The longest I've kept a car is approx 18months - 2years All 3 of these have been Octavia's starting with a Mk1 Octavia vRS then Mk1 Octavia PD130 Elegance and now at 19months with my Mk2 Octavia PD140 Elegance

Pug 407 Sport SW 3yr old- 3months

Fabia vRS (3months) was SWMBO's who had it for 3 1/2yrs, I took it from her when she bought her Rav until I found something bigger

Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SXI 6months old (2 months)

Citroen Xsara 1.9td 3yr old- 18months (ish)

Rover 214sli (finally died with a 1.8vvc k-series engine in it) - 18months/2yrs

Sierra 2l Ghia - 1month (gave to a friend when his Cavilier sri130 was written of by a truck)

pug309 gti 12-18months

Saxo 1.1 - 6months (ish)

Corsa 1.5td - 6months (ish)

Astra 1.6sr - 12months (ish)

pug309 1.6sr - 8-9months (ish)

Fiesta 1.4 sport - 6-7months

Nova 1L saloon - 6-7months

Talbot Horizon - 1week (stolen)

Some of these were owned at the same time so times overlap slightly & I know I have owned more cars but they were all owned for 1-3 months as bangers.

Its rare though for me to buy a car thats less than 3yrs old so while I've owned alot of cars & lost alot of money on changing cars so frequently I've not lost as much as I could have done

Longest I have kept a car is 4 years and that was my MK1 vRS, had the Superb now for 2 years and the Octavia I had before this I had for 3 years. Before my first Skoda I was changing every 18 months or so.

I had my first car for 3 months, my second for 2 and a half years, and now my third I've had for 5 and a half years. Don't know if I can justify changing till about 8 yrs / 100k miles

sorry to bust your bubble but there's no way they will give you £7.5k for a 11year old skoda, you can say whatever value you like to them, they will still only give you market value. Insurance companies are ba%#~>ds

I'm on my 11th and 12th cars in a little over 10 years, longest I've had cars for is 2 years and the shortest is 6 months. I've had my octavia since August and I'm already thinking of swapping it for a x type diesel, I'll see how long a I can on for!

I have been running company cars for almost 10 years now and they used to go at 80k but now its 100k.

So I am on my 6th compay car.

As for my own cars I stpped counting years ago. Its into 3 figures now.

I must have had around 20 in the last 10 years as well as the company cars.

I do get bored very quickly with cars.

If the Octavia was mine I would probably keep it for a few years.

I have heard of a lady who had a RTC and had her car insurered for £3k but she only got £1000 because that was the market value, even though her certificate stated insurered value £3000. They pay out what ever they want.

You can say your car is worth what you want under a normal policy, and they will give you market value.

Adrian Flux, Sky, Chris Knott, HIC, Brentacre... any of the specialist companies do it. If you've got a specialist car, like Jason does, you need specialist insurance.

The price depends on the risk (as per every insurance), but my experiences of it have shown it to be a fairly small price to pay to guarantee your pay out.

If Jason sold his mongrel, it wouldn't be worth £7.5, but the work gone into it and the collection of parts would cost that to replace the car, and this is what agreed value is all about.

Agreed value is often used on specialist policies where the car is altered in some way to make it noticably more valuable than a standard car.

I would be interested to know, has anyone put it to the test? Ie been unfortunate enough to write a car off and claim such a high amount?
