Bolero to RCD510 DAB

Featured Replies

I have tried to search for any info on this, but not found anything.

I have 2010 L&K with Bolero fitted.

I have picked up a VW RCD510 DAB (later type with DAB radio incorporated)- it is supplied with the 4 digit security code.

I believe that this should be a straight changeover with the Bolero as it has the same dimensions inc. front panel, so uses the existing dash fascia panel.

Before I go ahead and swap it over, I have a couple of queries:

1. Am I likely to need any re-coding or should this be a simple plug and play? - I have the OEM GSM BT kit installed.

2. I presume that the security code will have to be entered when the unit is powered up, but I don't appear to have a security code for the Bolero - if I try to re-fit the Bolero, will I then need a security code for it?

Any input would be appreciated - I don't want to be in a situation where I haven't got a working head unit in the car.

Cheers,

John.

You may need to recode for telephone, but I doubt it.

The car will store the code for the Bolero as well, so you can refit it later without having to enter a code. If you want to sell it though you will need to go to your local Skoda dealer to get the code from the VAS system.

Did you get a DAB aerial with the 510, other than that it should be plug and play.

You may want to check the fascia - i highly doubt it will fit as the Bolero in the Octy is different to every other VAG head unit. You may need to buy a new fascia (columbus one) which is about £35.

Notice how the bolero tapers down...

You'll also need to purchase an additional aerial to get DAB reception as the standard aerials are not capable of DAB reception and the connectors are different. I am not sure how you would mount that, but there are some stick on ones for the windscreen or you can get combined aerials for the roof but this will be problematic as you have the phone kit.

All,

Thanks very much for the super quick replies.

I have to admit that I had missed the difference in shape of the front panels! does anyone know the part no. for the Colombus type fascia panel in piano black finish for L&K?

Good to know that the security code shouldn't be an issue - I was planning to keep the Bolero to re-fit when we sell the car.

I have the antenna sorted - one of our glass mout types (through glass coupled).

Cheers,

John.

Yep i missed that when i got my columbus! Had a nice gap around the nav for a few weeks until i got round to getting one. It simply unclips bottom up from below the climate unit.

Please show a pic when it's all done, especially of the illumination as I want to do the same thing and am wondering what the difference in colour is going to look like (ie the red of the head unit and green of the instruments and switches).

How did you get on with this? Any joy so far?

The DAB system used in Europe is a differant system to that in the UK, so unless its a UK specific unit it won't work here.

I'm sure the OP will have already considered that and will have a UK DAB unit and not a DAB+

I'm looking to do the same myself and have arranged to buy an RCD510 DAB to swap for my Bolero in my 2010 Octavia. If I buy a dab aerial is it plug and play? Will my Bluetooth kit work? Any recoding required?

Cheers

I'd be very interested to know the out come of this thread swapping out the bolero for the RCD510DAB. Did all go as planned any problems? I want to do the same.

I swapped mine over and it was pretty straightforward, a windscreen mounted DAB aerial and the different fascia as described above were needed. My car is a 2010 FL so no new CANBUS required, I'd guess as your car is the same age you'd be ok too. The reversing sensors, temperature settings for the air con and the bluetooth all work exactly as the Bolero, I'm really pleased with the upgrade. My RCD510 has the Dynaudio audio system (Not sure if they all do) and the sound quality is definitely better, especially on music stored on SD card.

Brilliant thanks, come pay day I'll be on it!

bf1 which windscreen aerial did you use, and did it require separate power or does it get phantom power up the aerial cable?

Just a screen mount one from Halfords, pretty sure it was one of these

Autoleads DAB Film Antenna SMB - DAB-AA1

I got a local firm to fit it for me but I'm pretty sure it didn't need seperate power, the film antenna needs to be earthed though so I guess the power is fed from the head unit up the aerial cable

Would have come from a VW with the Dynaudio speaker/amp upgrade and will be coded to think that system is there. You'll be running off the internal 4x20w amp id expect so ought not sound any different to any other bolero.....

It did come from a vw, could be my imagination but both myself and the wife were convinced that mp3's sounded better. Happy with the DAB benefits anyway so a worthwhile upgrade for me

Just swapped mine out so there will be a mint Bolero on ebay soon! All works perfectly with the climate and reversing sensor display, I quite like the display colours of the VW units the green never did it for me. It sounds exactly like the Bolero to me i.e. very good! Ordered the new surround trim, just need a DAB aerial now!
