Brake fluid change on Octavia 4x4

Featured Replies

My brembos feel like they've gone off a bit so as well as changing the pads I'm gonna do a full fluid change. Just wondered if someone could tell me how much fluid I need?

2l max for a full bleed.

3l according to vw master tech...

but they are probably wasteful...

Turns out 1L was enough.

Hope halfords will accept the return of an unopened bottle.

I've been told the capacity is 1.5 litres but it's nearly impossible to get it all out...

Fluid isn't much so my next change (overdue) will be effectivly flush it...drive into wales and back and repeat.

A good quality performance dot4 is fine with regular changes, annual or bi annual.

Super dot4 is also known as dot5.1 and thse are more longlife brake fluids as they asborb water at a lower rate then the regular dot4, but the boiling point of a wet dot4 is often higher then the wet boiling point of the dot5.1

In short a performance dot4 will not last as long as a dot5.1 but the dot4 will perform better under hard use.

cheers for that, any idea's on the sequence appreciated

*bump*

The Golf Haynes Manual gives different sequences for the Mk 20 and Mk 60 ABS units. I know my 4X4 has the Mk 60 but don't know which one the Octavia vRS has. If you have a look at the ABS on your car and post the part number here - mine is 1J0 614 517F - I can then check the bleed sequence for that particular ABS. (The ABS is on the front LH wheelarch slightly to the rear of and below the air cleaner. The part number is on top and is easy to see).

'Bump' for meetsteve to have a look at....

That is listed as a TEVES Mk 60 ABS, in which case the bleed sequence should be the same as the 4X4. But it would be nice to have a Master Tech confirm this.

thanks denis, helpful as ever, just weighing up wether to attempt myself or get it done.

I have confirmed with my dealer (many thanks to Colin, the Service Manager of WJH Motors at Bedford) that the sequence for Octavias fitted with the Mark 60 ABS is: front left, front right, rear left then rear right. The Haynes Manual for the Golf/Bora warns that if the hydraulic fluid has run dry in either chamber of the reservoir, the system must be pre-bled as follows before carrying out the bleeding sequence described above:

1. Bleed the primary and secondary circuit bleed screws on the brake master cylinder.

2. Bleed the front left and right brakes simultaneously.

3. Bleed the rear left and right brakes simultaneously.

The message here is to make sure that brake fluid reservoir is kept topped up throughout the bleeding process!
