MK1 headlight upgrade

Featured Replies

Hey

got a lovely mk1 rs but im doing a few bits and would like to upgrade the headlights or bulbs. ive heard HID kits being fitted but im also told that because they arnt ment to be in the unit that the beam is all over the place. could this be true? if so is there a really good bulb to fit? i like a nice crisp white light

thanks

Because they're not a projector unit, HIDs will scatter, so you shouldn't use them

i fitted H4 canbus HID's in the headlamps of girlfriends mk1 and the lighting is vast improved over what was and also using H1 HId's in the foglamps and has also eliminated the black spot of which was left with the old bulb

My comment still stands. They should be used in projector housings to ensure correct beam pattern.

Wont dodgy HIDS fail the MOT now?

yes

yes but it a pointless test imo.

mot time so hid bulbs out and plug standed 1s in for test lol.

pass mot 5s later hids plugged back it.

as long as a standerd bulb is in at the time of test its a pass.

only your local coppers would get the chance to stop and tell you to remove them within 7 day.

Then after then you could start getting fines.

You missed out the bit about dazzling oncoming traffic. ;)

14 days.

I fitted some H4 Hids to my headlights last year but the glare when stood infront of them was awful at night so i took them out within a week,

Had aftermarket hids fitted to my two previous volvos and the 406 i had for abit and they were okay because they were H7 hisds and headlights had abit infront of bulb so you didn't get the glare like you do with octy headlights,

I had the idea of putting them in the fog lights but not got round to trying it

think il stay away from hid's as i dont want the hastle of messing around at mot time tbh.

what about a decent bulb set? ive heard nightbreakers are good? i had some Ultra's in my old car and was really dissapointed in them.

Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Extreme vision are the pick of the legal varieties. :D They are better than stock but they will never be amazing.

Halfords have buy one get one free at the moment, so just bought some ultra brilliance ones to try. :smirk:

Had Osram Nightbreakers and didn't notice much difference and they didn't last long.

I'd recommend Philips 100% x-treme vision @ £19ish - noticed the difference with these, especially on full beam.

H4.

And get osram nightbreaker unlimited ones.

Bit more expensive, but my god the difference over normal H4 bulbs is massive. The Philips ones are even better, but more expensive and don't last as long ....

thanks for the replies guys

macllirl - best place to buy the osram nightbreaker unlimited ones?  link if possible please?

@hussair5 - I always use www.powerbulbs.com who often have BOGOFs and free sidelight bulbs, as well as good service.

Or EuroCarParts.

Even with international shipping charges  for me to Ireland they still work out cheaper than most of the competition, and always have offers on.

Another vote for the Philips bulbs. Bright enough for night driving, dipped and main beam, and a lot better than the bulbs I had in previously (sorry, can't remember what they were). Plus they won't be dazzling oncoming traffic, unlike a lot of ultra bright bulbs fitted to new cars.

+1 for powerbulbs - good prices and quality stuff with good service.
