Different bolero models & compatability?

Featured Replies

Okay, I know a bolero will slot straight into my octy, but the question I can't find an answer to on here is whether I will get FULL compatability with my motor as it's only JUST a pre-facelift '58 plate, bearing in mind there appears to be different versions of the Bolero unit in terms of software.

Can anyone clear this up concisely via some sort of table, ven diagram or interpretive dance?

I understand that from a certain model year back, you would need to get a revised canbus update, but am I right in thinking that even if you do have a revision K (or whatever is generally required), which i'm guessing i'll have in my car, there are different versions of the Bolero unit itself based on which year IT was made in?

So basically, what are the differences, if any, between different years of manufacture of Bolero headunits, and how does that affect how successfully it would work in my september 1st 2008 registered '58 plate Octy?

(and breathe!)

What reg is your car?

You won't get PDC or climate on the Bolero unless you have a FL with the later PDC unit and Climatronic unit.

You will need a later CAN Gateway that a Revision K - your car should be OK though but get someone with VCDS to scan it so you know what CAN Gateway you actually do have rather than guessing.

As for revisions of the Bolero, as yours is a pre-FL then all I can advise is steer clear of the later Delphi units as they only seem to support CAN BAP for the communication with Maxidot.

You won't get a definitive answer as both myself and Wardy have had various issues with screen brightness on various revisions. It seems to be a bit of a lottery and not enough people swap out Boleros unlike Columbus units to get to the bottom of this. Firmware upgrades are dealer only as well so not something you can do yourself either.

As per the PMs, I think your only option is to actually try the Bolero unit you are thinking of buying to check it works, or get one of the earlier revision units that will work fine in your car.

Any idea what year the Delphi models started coming in from? Or is there any way you can tell from the outside of the unit's chassis?

Not exactly, but a unit I had manufactured in 2010 was a Delphi.

The Delphi units have a big 'Delphi' label on the top of the Bolero emoticon-0144-nod.gif

A scan of the car in question with VCDS should show the manufacturer if you can't pull the headunit to look at the labels on it.

So am I right in thinking that ALL units after a certain period are made by Delphi then? That would mean it restricts the number of units that would work completely... or is there some way of getting it to all work with a Delphi model?

And does it just not work at all if it's a Delphi in a pre-fl, or just certain features?

Yep, all units from around 2010 onwards are Delphi as far as I know.

What do you mean by getting it all to work - PDC, Climate etc. ?

If so, go buy a FL Octy with a Bolero in emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

If all you want is the MFSW and Maxidot to work without any backlight issues then don't get a Delphi unit from a later car, get one of the earlier units. You can get the PDC and Climate display to work by retro-fitting the later PDC and Climate units and doing a whole load of rewiring. Not for the faint hearted, not cheap, and it would probably work out cheaper to trade the car in and get a FL!

As I said, as yours is on the cusp of the FL you may actually have a few FL parts in there already without knowing as various parts such as the FL Maxidot, steering wheel and wing mirrors started creeping in to the builds on the pre-FL cars.

Your only real way of knowing is by trying the unit, all the rest is pure speculation and I doubt you will find a definitive answer.

But Paul's has a working Bolero emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

No, but i'm a professional emergency services blue light driver so unless it's a motorway I can get places just as quick through better driving than the average boy racer. ;)

Two bulls, a father & son, in a field spot a group of cows in the next field. The young bull says, 'let's run down there and f*ck one of those cows!'. The older bull says,' no, lets walk slowly down there and f*ck all those cows'. B)

Speed isn't everything. ;)

Blackspaven, that is one of my favorite joke/mantras of all time. Respect to you sir.
