Golf GTi - 2003

Featured Replies

What's your experiences with this car ?

Followed one today down some nice A roads and he seemed to be pretty quick !

Maybe it was mapped etc, but it was quick emoticon-0144-nod.gif

I had a 1.8 20v turbo mk golf running roughly around the 230bhp area very quick and loved my time with it.. prefer it to my skoda but hey... loved mine though :)

All golf gti's are rapid! Lol! Did you keep up? :)

If we are talking in general, they were the least deserving golf of the GTi badge in n/a form they are woeful. Even the 1.8T is a poor excuse unless it's the anni.

Oh yes. I was just surprised that it was that quick. We're not talking 'racing' as I don't condone it, just some fun.

My car's only done 950 miles, so no need to thrash it before things are run in a little emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Is the 2.0l not something like 115bhp?!

I'm not a great fan of MKIV Golfs in general but Anniversarys are tasty (seem to hold their value as well) - also like V5s and R32s.

What about the 'baby' R32, the V6 4Motion? 200bhp and AWD... always had a soft spot for those.

The 2.0 one was pretty ****. Evo highly rated the 1.9 TDi PD 150 when it came out, surprisingly.

I remember a VW aficionado I worked with putting me off the 4Motion at the time (I don't mean putting me off buying one - that was never remotely realistic financially  ), by saying it was too heavy and overly-complicated.

I do remember drooling over the Sunday Times' review of the R32 at its launch (2002?) - I think the Times said it was too little too late to redeem the MKIV as a performance car (it gave it an ok review and three stars out of five). I still prefer the MKIV R32 over the MKV R32 (in terms of looks - they both sound brilliant).

The Mk5 R32 is a wondrously easy car to drive quickly - especially in with DSG!

It's still on the "if I come into a bit of money and lived closer to work" list ;)

Our lass has got the 1.8 20v non turbo (125bhp) and it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice puddin! But i have just come from a mental 340t volvo :giggle: The 2.0 is even worse and I don't expect a standard turbo would be much quicker tbh. It's lovely to drive (better than the vrs, and a hell of a lot comfier than the Volvo!) also handles like a go kart. I'd like a mk4 r32 at some point in the future when I think of going post 90's again

Second-hand values have been taken a nosedive. A chap on a VAG owners' site was struggling to sell his (2006) - it was mint with a good spec. - eventually dropped his price to near enough £10k.

Apart from the early ones, I think road tax is around the 400 mark, which is nasty - I don't think mpg is too bad though - 30mpg for general horsing around?

It's surely as complex as an R32 though... ;)

It's still rapid for being a bit porky- pretty sure it despatches 0-60 in around 7 seconds. The V5 was deemed extremely lazy, the 5-pot (whilst sounding great) lacked a bit of fizz and sparkle. Lovely smooth engine, more suited to the Seat Toledo methinks.

Just some food for thought. For some reason I have a bizarre fetish for the Golf Mk IV floorpan cars, luckily I now own one. :giggle:

I just glided past that elephant in the room  . I read the MKIV R32 Evo review earlier - they give it a massive  .

From forum browsing I've read that people have had a lot of bother with the PD150, and the PD130 is the better engine (and as former MKI Fabia vRS owner I'm a great fan of the PD130).

I liked the V5 based on being in one belonging to a colleague a good number of years ago - seemed punchy enough to me but I was probably easily impressed - definitely did sound good though.

Yeah, that's an issue - but my dad's got a point - it won't really stop you getting the car you want. And it's true. Just becomes another monthly cost, just have to put it away then pay the £400 :giggle:

It's a big lazy engine, but drop down a few cogs, down the windows, foot to the floor and there's not a noise like it!

Depending on my situation, it's one of them or a Scirocco next!

From what I've read, the PD150 is more "stressed", which is the issue. The PD130 isn't quite as on the edge as the 150 so tends to be more reliable.

I had the 25th Anniversary

Lovely motor, mine was the diesel (quiker then the standard petrol) and she was pretty quick. Octavia is defiantly faster though

Had a mate with the 150. He didn't have any bother but he thought the 130 was better to drive.

Work mate's husband had a Mk5 R32. Beautiful car in that bright blue. He only had it a year then sold it for a Disco 3 because they had a little one and the R32 boot is on the shallow side with the 4wd under it. He's still in mourning yet for that car. He only lost £500 in that year.

I remember not long after I got the Octy the petrol prices suddenly went up and a few dealers were off loading brand new R32s for £17k. Bargain of the decade for a few people.
