Has my turbo died? What should i do?

Featured Replies

Hi, last night i was driving home and all of a sudden at just under 3000 rpm in 4th gear heard what sounded like a sudden release of pressure, the turbo started wailing like a ghost and the car lagged dramatically. I have checked the pipework for loose fitting as there are a few posts on boost pipes slipping off and havent noticed anything. Is it a gonner? If it is, does anybody want to buy a vrs with a not so working turbo? cheers, ferg.

if i were you id have it checked by a locate trusted garage before you decide to sell it could be the intercooler that has blown as i had the same problem but sounded worse than it actually was.

I dont really know to be honest. I was sorting of hoping for some idea.

Here's a run down of what it is and the work i have had done since owning it:

Black Skoda fabia vrs 54 plate all standard

126000 miles

1 owner from new before me.

FSH

Cam belt water pump etc changed at 116000

new radiator at 116000

leather seats (not heated)

cruise control

new rear discs and pads about 3 months ago

4 new kumho izen winters about 2 weeks ago

about a month ago i stuck it in the kerb and bent the offside drive shaft and wishbone which have just been replaced along with the ball joint.

what do you reckon?

Try getting some leak detection spray first.. Usually you would be chucking smoke out like mad

Does sound like boost hoses popping off. It hasn't been ran dry etc?

Any engine management?

i'll try and find some of that. yeh it was dark last night so i couldnt really tell if there was any smoke immediately after it happened but it certainly isnt smokey today. No engine management lights as of yet and its not been run dry since i have owned it. It was always such a worry that i would always let the engine reach operating temperature before even considering giving it a bit of oomph.

Sounds like you look after it well.

Try disconnecting the intake hose see if it makes any notable diffence.. if it is the same chances are there is just a boost leak. If it gets worse then perhaps it is.

Pretty bizarre that it would just give up the ghost without anything too spectacular happening though! Is it mapped?

having said all of this i have just thought about where the intercooler is and when i got friendly with a kerb the other week. i could have given it a bit of a knock. the garage are going to have a look at around 4 today so i guess i will have to wait and see

Thanks, i like to think i do but sometimes these things just happen i suppose. i shall go and have a little experiment and get back to you. no its not mapped or modded in anyway.

Hope it isn't terminal mate!

could well just be that the pipes have dislodged/moved slightly on impact when in contact with the kurb then when under load (quite high load in 4th gear at just under 3000 rpm) it's decided it didn't fancy holding on anymore.

Anyway, i'll stop waffling. Let us know how you get on later.

I hope so too.

Yes i'm hoping its just something as simple as a dislodged pipe. Its so tight to do anything under there without a ramp i could have easily missed something.

Thanks very much for your help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just taken the car to the garage and they say the turbo has had it. I might take it for a second opinion at a friends garage but after speaking to him on the phone he didn't sound too positive either. I think its time to try and sell it. Does anyone have any idea what sort of money i could ask for it? If somebody were to do the turbo themselves it could be a little bargain.

Why are you so keen to get rid of the car? Id personally just put another turbo on it. Get a garrett replacement instead of the kkk, then if your so keen to sell up you will get more money by selling a decent a car.

Just my opinion

I'm pretty keen to sell because i have only had it a year and seem to have spent quite a lot of money on it. It just seems to be a bit of a bad luck car. I used to have a 1992 vauxhall nova which was my first car and had for 3 years. i think in total i spent 300 quid on it over that time and it was bloody great. In your opinion what is the car worth after having a new turbo? If its going to cost nearly a grand for a garrett fitted surely its not worth it. If i do fit the turbo then i will have spent more on the car in the last month than i have earned in the last month.

Turbos can be had for a few hundred quid - give turbocentreuk a call mate if I remember correctly I got quoted £450 for a brand new Garrett PD150 turbo

Selling it is one thing, but selling it broken?! You`d be mad, for the sake of a couple of hundred quid to get it running again seems a bit OTT. If your set on selling, you could get a use turbo fitted for less than £200. I`m sure the car will be worth far far less if it isnt running.

i will have a look but i wouldn't be able to fit it myself so you can add a good few hundred quid on top of that price.

I just paid £120 to have a new turbo fitted - that was with an oil change :)

i hope mine is as easy as yours to fit. not sure whether its even worth trying myself as i can see something going wrong plus i could do with the car pretty soon. a friend is a bit of a turbo whiz so might see if he wants to fit it for a few quid. cheers.

Having read your post about the condition of the car. First off you have done well to get 126k out of the kkk turbo. Second cambelt waterpump has been done, the turbo is getting done. The only other big bill I can see in the future is the clutch needing doing. Get the turbo done and you have done 2 of the 3 major jobs that can go wrong .
