Engine light on - no difference in driving though..Car runs fine..

Featured Replies

Hi,

wife was driving car around this morning and the engine light came on. Or the "tap" symbol as she refers too.. :dull:

Anyway, I am wondering whether the wind and bad weather has anything to do with it? The EGR valve has been blanked out way before i bought the car as i cant see the thing anywhere in the engine bay.

Because its the wife and i'm at work, I told her to call the AA to try and determine whats wrong with the car. She is worried about driving the car regardless...

Could be 1 of 100 things right?

Yep, could be all sorts. Sounds like you need it scanning, the AA will probably have a generic code reader to check your engine fault, but given you're also having ASR problems I'd say it's worth finding a member with VCDS to do every module for you. If you're anywhere near Nottingham or Derby I can do it for you, if not there's a list in the Diagnostics section on the forum, I suggest you have a look for someone local and drop them a PM, you may well get to the bottom of both issues at once :)

Get the AA to read the fault(s) stored.

I had my "tap" symbol come on a couple of weeks after I bought my car, quick read of the ECU using the torque app and I had a faulty temperature sensor - car drove fine like this, as if nothing was actually wrong.

I hope yours is just as simple :)

If as said above by gac that you experiencing ASR problems as well I would suggest more than likely its your MAF.. the MAF (I think) helps regulate the ASR by measuring air flow and helping deliver power etc so by knowing how much to alter the air fuel ratio by to stop the wheel spinning and cutting power.

If your MAF has failed it will typically revert back to a base setting (I've been driving mine like this for 3 months now with the MAF unplugged due to the cheap ebay MAF giving an awful power delivery) and it will feel pretty spot on, just reverts to estimated values from taking other information given as opposed to actuals from the sensor I assume.

Cheers mate. I'll take the offer up once i get a code reader sorted. Wife told me the AA guy found the following code:

"Injector Circuit open - cylinder 1". He cant get nto the actual injector so he cleaned the round plvs (whatever the heck that is).

The lights now gone. He did a quick once over and said the car was in very good nick as was the engine and exhaust etc..

Nothing urgent. Thanks God!

Hiya,

I know the fronts are near the legal limit. I have assumed the ASR was probably due to poor weather conditions and a lack of grip...

Will look into MAF issues..
