P0102 'Mass or volume air flow circuit low input' help please

Featured Replies

Warning triangle with circular arrow came on followed by the engine management light, so I used my new Bluetooth OBD2 dongle and Android Torque which shows the fault to be 'P0102'.

I fitted a Pipercross performance filter on Friday, and this is the first time I've used the car since, could I have disturbed something whilst fitting it, or is it likely to be more serious? Cheers. :)

Maybe you dislodged your MAF sensor plug?

Plug will be off air mass meter no question about it.

Many thanks, I'll take a look in daylight tomorrow!

Just had a look, the plug on the outside of the MAF's nice and tight, removed and refitted it a couple of times and nothing changed, is there another connector inside the airbox piping, not got time to take it to bits again today, and didn't think to look inside, doh?! :o

Nope no other connectors on the MAF mate, just that one, have you checked the wires to it around the plug, no breaks/bare wires etc..

When fitting the filter you didn't coat it in oil did you?! Only thinking so because some times the MAF Gets Sh1ted up if you use filter oil and can damage the already very sensitive element wire on the MAF.

I would suggest it is just very coincidental and your MAF has went pop.. mine has gone twice now. Replace with a genuine or be annoyed as I am lol

Also, can you get a picture of the set up in terms of filter you are using, have you had to adapt the pipework to mount the MAF sensor or is it simply just a panel filter?

BTW.. the warning triangle is the traction control warning light and is unable to operate without a working MAF to regulate fuel/air mixture and this power to the driven wheels to provide traction

If its a pipercross panel filter its foam rather than pleated cotton so no oil, I guess there could be damage to the wires to the MAF though.

Thanks for the reply.

It's just a Pipercross replacement panel filter, came unoiled, and the instructions said it didn't need oiling, so I put it in dry.

Not had a proper look at the wires, will do tomorrow afternoon, cheers.

PS, any idea how much a genuine replacement MAF would be please? ;)

Depends where you get it from but I've seen them anywhere from £80 to £110

Thanks again. Friend of a friend works for Skoda, so he's going to see how much discount he can get me on one today.

Will it do any harm running the car with a broken MAF?

If you unplug the MAF the ECU runs the fueling on a standard set of airflow values which is fine to get you around until you can get it fixed but it may use more fuel than it should do, or be down on power.

Thing is though if the MAF was on the way out it was probably driving a bit rubbish/using more fuel than normal anyway. mine's been this way over a month (seriously lazy, I know) but yeah it's getting done this weekend, Promise.

Wouldn't say it is notably down on power, definitely tonnes smoother and less hesitant than before.

Finally got round to changing the MAF today, and changed the standard dump valve for a Forge 007P at the same time, no more warning lights, hurrah!!!

Only thing I notice now is that when accelerating, the turbo kicks in straight away, but then there seems to be a 'pause' in acceleration before it kicks in again, most noticeable in 2nd and 3rd gear.

When we fitted the 007P, I noticed that it seemed a bit taller than the standard one, and the small hose that goes into the top of the valve was a tight fit, could this be compressing and causing the hesitancy, or could it be something else? Cheers. :)

It could be. The wait before the turbo kicks in is lag which is caused by the turbo slowing down and then having to speed up again. If the DV isn't working properly then the boost can't escape properly so stalls the turbo and accentuates the lag.

Have you tried running it with the standard valve?

If you're worried about the vac hose in the top of the 007P being restricted, Forge sell a replacement top for the 007P with a vac nipple that comes out at right angles instead of straight out the top.

I can't say I noticed any lag with my 007P but at the time the car was running a standard map (10psi max boost) and I set it up so the spring wasn't too tight.

Thanks for the reply.

Done less than 10 miles since fitting the bits, and the DV was second hand and had been sat for a little while, hopefully it just needs some time to adjust to its new home. If it's still the same by the end of the week, I'll try swapping back to the standard one.
