New Superb with bad reflections from dashboard trim

Featured Replies

Hi everybody,

I actually found you and joined up a couple of months ago after I'd ordered a new Superb Estate (170CR Elegance DSG, black, with black leather interior) and since then, I've been dipping in on topics such as Winter Tyres and Body / Wheel care so that I'd be ready when it came. (And I didn't bother ordering mats as a dealer extra after reading some of the opinions on their quality.)

After 17 weeks or so, I took delivery on Saturday morning (07 Jan) and it looked every bit as stunning as I'd expected. ("It looks fantastic", was my wife's first reaction.)

However, within two miles of starting to drive it home, I was wondering why the view in the wing mirrors wasn't too clear and then I realised that I was getting a massive reflection from the (silvered) dashboard trim, both the main inlay strip and the trim around the right-hand ventilator.

On the driver's side in particular, with the sun behind me it was very noticeable and quite distracting.

I had a quick search in the forums, but couldn't see anything.

Is it just me, or are others putting up with it?

I'm not sure when the silver trim went into the production build, but I don't remember noticing it (and the reflection problem) in the couple of test drives that I had, nor in the week and a half that I had an "S" spec out on hire. If anything, I remember thinking how good the view was in those really big wing mirrors.

I can't believe that they couldn't have been aware of this prior to production build - it's arguably a genuine safety issue, especially in an estate, where you rely on the wing mirrors so much more.

OK, the quick and easy fix is a bit of black tape, but hey, that's not a fix to a top-of-the range vehicle that's otherwise everything I expected.

Any thoughts - has there been any discussion on this?

PS Full spec and options: Elegance Estate; Black / black leather; 170 CR; DSG; electric tailgate; variable boot floor; paddle-shift steering wheel; heated front windscreen; hill hold; dipping mirror; towbar prep.

I never noticed any trim reflections in the mirrors, UNTIL I let my dad drive the car and it was the first thing he mentioned.

I can see them now, but only if I "look" for them, and I thought it was the window sill trim on the outside of the car that was causing the reflection? After a while you will not notice it too much.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

I cant say that I've ever notice an issue with the silver trim (2010 Estate) and cant see (pardon the pun) how it could cause an issue with the wing mirror?

I do however, from time to time, get a glare off the Chrome Steering-wheel badge, and the chrome trim around the tacho's etc.

Maybe it's best to have a sit in a members car in your area? - Maybe the Specs have changed since you ordered, but i've never seen this mentioned elsewhere.

Good luck!

Al.

Welcome

I have the 'wood' trim in mine and there is also a slight reflection due to it being glossy, but not enough to get any glare from it.

You could get the trim vinyl wrapped in a non glossy material (matt carbon fibre?) to cure the problem.

Thanks for the replies to date - I'm glad to be aboard!

(Gizmo, I'd seen plenty of your posts, so I half expected a contribution.)

Yes, I probably could find a way of "wrapping" it, but it will need some care to do well, plus why should I anyway?

It may be an issue caused by relative viewing angles (eye position versus mirror inclination etc), but it was bad enough that I was half losing cars coming up behind me in the middle lane on the M60 as I drove home, so will I get used to it, I doubt it.

I'll do some experimenting and see if I can produce a more detailed description.

Meanwhile, I'll see what other comments emerge.

(Incidentally, I forgot to add "Park Assist" to the options - as per various comments (incl Gizmo), I'd worked out that it was worth it just for the front sensors. The option that I should have added was heated screen washer nozzles, but in the brochure that I first had, the picture looked like a headlight washer and I wasn't that fussed. I'll just have to make sure that I get a decent grade of winter screenwash - I think there's a thread somewhere.)

I took delivery of my Superb Estate Elegance on the 1st of December and soon noticed the reflections you mention. I'm still experimenting with seat positions although they don't appear to make much difference to the reflections. As other contributors have written, you hardly notice it after a while - or can train yourself to ignore it! Maybe a matt wax polish would minimise it? Nevertheless I'm delighted with the car.

Can't say that I've noticed it in mine (2011 SE Spec) but then again not been looking for it, so to speak!

Guarantee though that I'll notice it tonight on way home

Had my elegance since October and I have not been fortunate enough to drive in the sunshine. My wipers work well!!

However I agree with cooops, I will probably notice everytime I drive now!!

I had never noticed this before I saw this thread. It was all I could see today... :wonder:

i think it's just you, i never noticed this.

Same here - it's all I can see in my drivers mirror now, arrrggghhhh

:-)

Oh no, now I can see it as well.

Wish I'd never read this post

Just realised I never noticed it in 92 miles of driving today. Hopefully I have nipped this in the bud...

I have a 2011 elegance, the only reflection I find annoying is the dash grill next to the screen reflecting on to the screen on sunny days.

Bizzare as I've not noticed it in our Superb (not that I get to drive it that often) as I took delivery of a Mk 6 Golf a month ago & guess what... same reflection here too, bugs the 'ell out of me! I guess it will just appear on the Superb now too.. a bit like... can you see the headlights moving LOL.

Both my business partner and me have superbs, I have the wood trim in mine and have not noticed this at all but he has the silver and commented on the reflection after the first few days of getting the car

I owned my Superb for 2 years and the best part of 30,000 miles, never really noticed a problem of reflections from dash components whilst using the mirrors and certainly had no issues seeing what was coming behind no matter how bright it was outside.

Only one year though. No reflection from dashboard despite silver components. But from that little silver plastic strip in the steering wheel I've got some reflections today. Easily blocked however... B)

It is not a reflection in the wing mirrors. Its on the window. Anybody noticed it already?

And what are you looking on the windows during your ride in the first place?

What I am seeing with woodtrim and black/ivory dashboard is the reflection of the chrome plastic application around the air outlets on the dashboard.

I will get my new superb with mirage and in april and I am absolutly not worried.

Oh well. I saw it today! Nooooooooo.... :@ It's just like you point it out, reflections on the side windows. As long as you are focused on the mirror, this isn't a problem to me anyway. A tiny little bit annoying though.

I'm going for the S trim now...

It might help driving with an open window and try out what the heating system is capable of.

Hi folks,

Well it looks like I've started something with this one - there's enough people seeing something to say that it's not just me, although the proverbial jury is out on deciding just how bad an effect it creates.

As it happens, because of a business trip last week, I didn't drive it again until last night (Sunday), so I've not had chance to study in detail since my first posting, though I could see an intermittent effect as I went past streetlights tonight.

However, I think that "Digidoctor" has probably got it - it must be a reflection in the side window (as you look through it at the wing mirror) and yes, I was also seeing the reflection from the chrome trim around the air outlet.

I'll study it some more, but so that there's no misunderstanding here, so far it's just a fantastic car and it was absolutely effortless on a long motorway / A road journey last night.

I didn't notice this but was afraid to 'look' too hard. Its not there on mine for some reason, other than a very slight reflection from the light on the side ventilator dials at night - but very slight. However was parking yesterday and used mirror lowering and 'bingo' the reflection was so bad that I could hardly see the kerb. Brought the mirror up to full height and all was well. However I parked the car like a learner driver. I'll put that down to my obsession with not damaging the alloys. The Superb Estate makes my old Merc C Class seem like a Dinky toy beside it.

For those of a certain age Google 'Dinky toy'... ;)

On a similar note, is it possible to make the various dashboard and other warning lights go dimmer than the original dimmest settings?
