What sort of revs do you guys try and keep it at? To get the best mpg? My mate says that you shouldn't try and keep it at 1500rpm because its just on the verge of the turbo kicking in and can bring the mpg down alot. So whats the ideal revs to keep it at when trying to get the best mpg?

I always make sure my revs are just above 2000 to avoid labouring the engine.

In the lower gears, I find 1,500 - 4,500 is fine.

In the higher gears, 2,000+ - 4,300ish is all thats really needed.

General driving I never need to take it over 2000, even on the motorway it'll not go over 2500 often. I average around 42mpg (PD100 5spd) and there's loads of hills round here. :)

Thats labouring the engine IMO.

My dad has a PD100 Polo, he does keep it in the midrange - 2,000 - 3,000 and he gets 56 MPG. I dont get much worse consumption than you, and I thrash the tits off my car ;)

I would have thought 2-3k is the best range to keep it at but that would mean being in 2nd at 30mph (i think) and that doesn't seem right, I always stick in 3rd.

I always drive up to at least 30 in 2nd gear. I know it does feel strange when you are used to a petrol, but higher revs do seem to be needed in the lower gears. For example, if I changed into 3rd at 20 mph, the car is probably only doing about 1,300 rpm or so, which impedes your progress because the turbo is not spinning yet. For optimal driving, I find if the revs drop to about 2,200 after you change gear, you get no turbo lag...

When cold I rev it at least 2500 rpm, when warm at least 3000 rpm, this is high rev diesel engine so I guess it should be driven like that, there are many cases of turbo failures at 150 000 km when it was reved at 1500-2000 rpm, maybe its not the main reason but i think it had something to do with that.

I allways wait for it to pop over 2000 before hard right footing it..... I was thinking that you are putting the engine under too much load before.

On the moterwau I run at about 2000-2500 but above 2000 for best mpg just seems to be less load for the engine :thumbup:

It all depends - if you're going downhill whatever ticks over is fine :rofl:

Going up a hill I definitely make sure I'm 'on-turbo'.

The engine has so much torque it's hard to labour it anyway, but why not make it easy on it, the vRS has plenty of gears for each situation :D

I keep the Turbo " just on " which for me is 1900 RPM, this allows use of the Torque, to extract myself out of any potential problem situation. ;)

I wonder if theres something wrong with mine... if I keep it on 1900, I still get a slight lag, whereas about another 300 rpm over that and its more less as instant as it can be.

it's around 1900, it does depend on the vehicle, but it won't be below that I seem to remember. So you need to go up to 2200 before boost? Ouch.

The technical stats for the (facelift) car say that peak torque is at 1900rpm so it shouldn't be laggy then?!

Thing is, its not all the time for some reason. I'm puzzled about it TBH. Sometimes I can "fix" it by switching the car off and back on, and when I do that it often feels a bit quicker too....

How very strange. Has a dealer had a look at it?

down hill 6th all the way unless you need to drive slower than 30

flat rolling roads no accelleration keep around 1,500 rpm

accelerating and uphill which ever gear is closest to 1,900rpm (or higher revs)

I get around 65-72.9mpg following this means on a 22 mile round trip i do regularly

also i got the 72.9mpg but not going over 50mph (god it felt slow)

no rolling out of gear that seems to be worse

also dont brake as much for corners the fabia corners really well you'll be surprised

Not yet, but the car is due in for a service soon, so I'll mention it then.

Yeah peak torque is 310Nm@1900rpm

I experimented in a not very scientific way yesterday on a drive from Kent to Suffolk and back yesterday (about 110 miles each way, mostly M-way/dual carriageway A road).

On the way there, I limited myself to about 2000rpm (=65mph in my 05-spec Fab vRS) and the trip computer gave me an average of just under 62mpg.

On the way back, I was driving more in my usual way and was going 75-85mph, but mostly sticking to about 2500 rpm. Trip computer showed an average of 54mpg.

Thats a bit strange. I thought keeping it 2000 or just under is supposed to waste more fuel because the turbo has to keep spinning up so I've heard. Thanks for the info though cheeky.
