Looking for a new phone

Featured Replies

My current contract with T-Mobile is due to end shortly and I have no idea what to replace it with. Not really bothered with an all singing and dancing phone just a reasonable smart phone so I can do basic emails, bit of web surfing and has a reasonable selection of apps.

Can anyone recommend a decent phone or deal out there?

Galxy S or Galaxy SII would suit you fine if you can get a deal with retentions.

Iphone if you suffer from status-need.

As a paid-up Briskodian you are probably wiser than this.

An android phone otherwise.

Any Andriod phone will do what you want. I like HTC but take a look at what is out there and see what deal you can get. Vodafone were offering the HTC Sensation for free just after Christmas

Really not bothered by an iPhone so Android probably the best option. Don't get on with Blackberrys (or that style) due to fat finger syndrom!

Will see what deals I can get on a Galaxy 2 or decent HTC.

Sounds like your best bet is a HTC or similar tablet style phone. I hate blackberries as well! :p

SWMBO did an interesting deal.

She got a Nokia N8 free with a £15/month plan. As a phone its a good camera.

Then via ebay bought a 6 month old HTC Desire HD for £170 and flogged the N8 for £150.

Hey presto, cheap plan, nice phone.

Not without risk but with reward.

What plan? All the ones I've seen are 24 months and pants for minutes and texts.

I managed to get a galaxy s2 for £32 a month on o2 for 18 months from 02 themselves. Everyone else were wanting 24 months. Got unlimited txts and 500mb web, low minutes tho but I don't phone much.

Worth a look at talktalk talkmobile for some good deals on vodaphone.

The HTC Sensation is available on Three for £25 per month. 500 mins, 5000 texts, 1GB internet.

They also have the Wildfire S if you want something a little smaller on the same plan as above but for £20.

Some pretty good deals out there... just a matter of shopping around.

But 24 months unless you know something I dont?

Why mot keep your phone and get a sim only deal?

I just got the HTC Sensation XE Beats. Brilliant phone. Would definitely say HTC has a much better OS than the iPhone, as well as better performance.

Big fan of SE phones again at the minute. They're promising upgrades to ICS etc, which is more than many other firms are doing.

Did consider this but my current phone is a very old Nokia and I would like something a bit more modern, doesn't have to be the most flash phone out there.

Thanks to all for the info and advice, there are just too many phones out there to make a balanced decision. Once I know which phones I am really interested in I will then go round the various supopliers looking at who will do the best deal.

Ah yeh. Good point.

That's why I just bought my last phone outright off ebay then plan to go Sim only when my contract is up in a couple of months time.

Been offered a deal on a Sony Ericsson Arc S is this a reasonable phone?

SGSII no question.

I just got alerted to this great deal.

I got mine from them but I'm with T-mobile albeit a 600 mins, 600 texts deal with unlimited internet over 18 months.

The really annoying thing about the linked to deal is that where we live, out in the sticks, the only signal which works in the house is the o2 one. Oh, if only I'd have waited another 8 or 9 months I could have had this deal :D

My head is starting to hurt! Thought I may have come to a decision and more deals jump out!!

The Samsung SG II looks good but I'm really not sure I need something as flash as that. I probably won't use more than 300 minutes a month and texts are not that frequent. I do like to have a reasonable data package, 3 do give an all you can eat deal which they say is not capped, wife's with them and has no issue.

Still need to push TMobile to see what they will do to keep me with them.

One further question, are most of the smart phones able to act as a mobile wifi hub so I can hook up my laptop when out and about? I know the Iphone does it, but not buying one just for that, actually just not buying one of them full stop. There tempted fate mow!!

Got an Xperia Arc (non S) atm. Really happy with it. The only things I might change would be the screen for an AMOLED off a SII or something, and maybe a dual core for future proofing (S has this I think?). The screen though, it's not something I'm unhappy with, it's just it's nicer on the SII. (Same way a supercar is nicer than mine - no real wish to change, but would if the chance came up.)

Otherwise I'm happy with it - and SE are giving upgrades to ICS/Android 4, which I don't think many other OEMs are doing.

Another HTC Sensation XE here, but if you don't want all the bells and whistles, then the Sensation and Galaxy SII are probably much more than you need. Plus not only will you cart around a relatively large, expensive phone, but you also have to suffer the poor battery life these monster phones have. I'd look further down the model ranges.if I read your first post correctly :)

Probably right. The inner geek in me likes the idea of a fancy all singing and dancing phone, however the sensible head just needs a phone, some texts and a bit of web surfing, possibly add in a Torque OBD 2 device which does a nice Android app. Just need to decide on what phone meets my needs and then chase the deals.

hmm not so surew about the poor battery life of monster phones. I used my SG II from the time I left home at 5am yesterday using mail and maps and calls plus skype and by 9pm I had 40% left. charged overnight and today have used it all day from 6am and I currently have 75% left.

I just rooted it and undervolt it when it's in standby.
