Oil filter removal

Featured Replies

So I've got my Pela pump, and been down to TPS to grab oil and filter ready to change the oil on Saturday (probably last free weekend for a while). Just on the off chance, I thought I'd better check that the PD130 used the same Laser filter wrench that I used on my PD150 but sods law it doesn't. My Leon had a filter cap with a rounded top, and acted as a 76mm, 14 sided (I think) socket. The Fabia is slightly different in that there's a normal 6-sided "nut" moulded into the plastic and then the 14 sided socket further down. But these 14 sides are much smaller and my filter wrench doesn't reach far enough down to grip this part.

So what tool do I need instead? Can I just get a socket big enough (what size?) to go over the plastic "nut" on the top and do it with a standard ratchet? Or can anyone link me to a suitable filter wrench with deeper sides? Cheers!

I had the same problem, and I ended up buying a 36mm deep impact socket when I did mine.

You're welcome to borrow it if need be.

There's a chance I've got one, but I'll bear it in mind, ta :)

Lol I tried all neighbours and pretty much all of my mates. Everybody I asked - their socket set only went up to 32 or 34mm emoticon-0120-doh.gif

36mm socket should be all you need, some later ones are 32.

No metric sockets that large (can only find up to 30mm), but I've still got my dad's ancient socket set which is mostly imperial, and a 1 1/4" socket seems to fit perfectly snug, no play. So I guess mine's a later, 32mm one (which in theory is slightly bigger than my 1 1/4" socket but who cares, it fits perfectly...)
