Rear Brake Problem

Featured Replies

Hi there I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a problem with the rear caliper slides siezing in the caliper housing. My mechanic has managed to snap one of the slides off inside the housing and tells me I need a new housing and caliper even although there is nothing wrong with the caliper itself.

If it is just a slider snapped off although (I dont know how he managed that!) if he cant get the snapped part out you will have to buy a new carrier and sliders. The caliper is seperate and bolts onto the outside of the carrier so he has either damaged the dust seal on the piston (aswell as snapped the slider) in which case a new seal can be fitted, or he is trying to rip you off lol

Yep I did one on a mates vrs a couple of years ago the top guide pin was well and truly seized in the caliper, we eventually loosened it with loads of spray lubricant and putting the caliper in a vice and twisting the pin with some massive industrial pliers. If the pins snapped off in the caliper though it'll mean a new one, I don't think the rear calipers are too dear though

He is telling me that the slider was siezed inside the carrier and when he heated the carrier up to try and loosen it it the slider snapped inside it.(agreed how the hell did he manage that) I asked surely you can buy the carrier seperate but he says skoda will only sell it complete with the caliper. Looks like my taxi will be off the road tomorrow till this is sorted. Very expensive brake pad change lol

Does anyone know if you can buy the caliper carrier/housing seperate from the caliper either from skoda or other part supplier?

ah rite, I always grease the sliders after pad change blame the last person to change them lol im sure if you rang skoda they would sell just a carrier or you could search ebay for (breaking octavia) and ask how much they want for one. Ive had two weeks off back on friday im dreading it if its any consolation its gonna be dead anyway lol
