Octavia Estate Parcel Shelf Repair

Featured Replies

Hello

Have just bough an Octavia Estate 2005 05 plate. It's a 1.9TDi Elegance, MK II.

Was a problem with retractable rear parcel shelf when bought and now faced with fixing it.

Have got to the stage where 1 end cap is removed (the non-spindle one) and am able to wind up roller to reload it.

Is it possible to some how then get the 2nd end cap on without the roller unwinding in the meantime?

Feels so close to being fixed but not the faintest idea how to complete this step, if at all possible.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Mike B

If you can wind the spring up up and all the parts are undamaged and in place- maybe hold the spindle with a vice/vice grip and slide the end cap in place. Without seeing it I can't really answer.

Thanks for your reply.

Guess some photos would be good.

The spindle engaged in one end of roller is part of one end cap. It is toothed, so as far as I can see, must be in place prior to winding at the other end. Once the other end is wound then, as far as I can see, tension can only be maintained by putting the second end cap in place. This is the unfathomable bit for me.

Anyway, for now will take to Skoda service centre and see what they say.

Thanks again for helping.

I managed to break one end of mine and got a new one from ebay for 26 pounds so not the end of the world .

Hello and thanks to all who replied

Now managed to sort this myself.

All parts were undamaged so solution turned out to be:

1. remove blind from sleeve and roll up tightly onto roller by hand as if rolling up roll of wrapping paper

2. take end cap with fig 8 pattern plug, ie. not the end cap with the notched spindle plug

3. engage end cap in appropriate end of blind roller, only goes in one way, and holding the blind still, rotated end cap for 12 complete revolutions.

(don't know the ideal number but this gave enough spring tension to be effective)

4. now keep end cap pressed onto end of roller so it doesn't unwind, introduce rolled up blind into sleeve and push end cap home into sleeve end

5. whilst ensuring roller remains pressed onto wound up end cap, push spindle end cap home at other end of sleeve.

6. place outer springs onto outside of each end cap and replace outer caps

6. refit assembly into car

This worked for me.

Question remains as to ideal number of revolutions to use to tension roller spring?

Out of interest - took the unit to an independent garage and a Skoda service centre and no one had a clue. Guess not many people turn up with dismantled parcel shelves. Oops.

Sorry about lack of photos - didn't get round to it...

Hi, sorry to resurrect this topic. My parcel shelf did the same so I followed Mike's advice, but the fig 8 pattern plug has the fig 8 sheered off - can anyone recommend where I can source a replacement or is it a trip to get a whole new parcel shelf blind setup?

Cheers

Thanks RainbowFire for your quick response!

But from a cheapskate POV I only wish SuperGlue was better! Thanks for your signposts for solutions.Cheers!

Ah, there are times that superglue, ducktape and empty eggboxes won't quite do the job ;) (many a time I've tried though ;) )

If the fig8 has sheered off, it's unlikely superglue would be much help. Epoxy *might* be better, but I wouldn't guarantee it.

Just replaced the cover bit using the instructions above. I found that 20 turns was about the right number - 12 didn't really give enough pull.

Hi Folks...Great info on how to repair the parcel shelf but I'm actually struggling removing the end caps of the parcel shelf and there's no info on how to to do this preliminary stage.

Any idea how to remove them and...do I need to remove both caps or just one - the one with the spring on?

Thanks

Hi all

I have exactly the same problem. Jimmy did you ever get an answer or did you work it out for yourself?

The fabric got jammed in the roller after the retracted blind fell over. After I had teased it open it would not retract.

So I obviously need to get the caps off so that I can rewind it. But I don't want to force or break anything.

A couple of photos would help/

Many thanks in anticipation.

Max

Hi Max. Unfortunately I didn't get any replies to this post so hope you have better luck than I did.

Jim.
