1.9 TDI Turbo Problems

Featured Replies

Hi everybody, this is my first post have been reading this forum for quite sometime. I have a 01 Octavia 1.9 TDI and am having trouble with the turbo.

First of all it only kicked in now and again, brought it to garage ,connected to computer and the MAF sensor was giving an error. The mechanic replaced it and since then the turbo kicks in all the time driving at low speeds around the city. Took it on a long journey today and at about 3000rpm in 4th gear going 50mph the turbo stops working and it takes ages to get to 60mph. So from reading a post here i found out if i turn the ignition off and on the turbo kicks back in and the car speeds up as normal, limp mode?

The mechanic said there might be another valve gone, dont know the name he showed it to me at the top of the engine near the centre of the car,

just thought i would ask you guys for advice??

Cheers

Dave

Not sure what valve it could be, I'm assuming you are outside warranty? If not get the dealer to fix it.

I'll have a look later to see if I can see which valve it is.

What output is the engine? 90, 110 or 130?

Sounds like you could do with someone looking at it with VAG-COM.

If it resets when you switch off then that probably is safe mode.

Good pics at any rate :)

Is that your engine bay?

I've no idea what the valve is, can't see what it's connected to but you might want to check your air filter!!!

i *think* its a N75 type valve that controls the VNT mechanism on the turbo

im having problems with my car and that is one of the possible culprits :(

Thats about right.

Its either that valve or more likely the turbo itself.

Have you checked to see if the EGR (Gas recirculation) valve is choked up.

A common problem on tdi units if you are doing a lot of short hops.

It can get very sooted up and needs removing and cleaning out.

Worth a check before you start thinking of turbo replacement.

Good luck

My dad was having problems with similar symptoms on his 1.9tdi A4. Local Audi garage speant a few visits not achieving anything but then a friend who works for Garrett suggested it might just be the turbo getting choked up due to lots of local town trips. Got him to drive the car in lower gear than normal to get the turbo hot and burnt the soot off and he hasnt had a problem since (12 months)... not bad considering the Audi garage wanted to fit a new turbo.

Cheers guys, the mechanic cleaned the EGR valve already, will drive the crap out of it for a while and see if it fixes itself

Guys, Just wanted to know where the EGR Valve is in the car, and is it hard to remove, read the link crxsud posted, just wanted to know if anyone had any experiences taking it out??

Cheers Dave

its the shiny round metal thing above and to the left of the oil filler cap in the picture above.

Removing the pipes connected to it and looking in will tell you how clogged up it is and if it needs cleaning. fairly straightforward job to do. :)

Ill have a look tomorrow cause i still have the turbo problem, mechanic thinks its a valve under the engine. It it has the same shape as the EGR but has a plunger arm going in the top which moves up and down, he thinks its clogged up which is causing the arm to stick, do you know what im talking about, any ideas??

Thats the VNT actuator on the turbo, and more than likely the cause of your fault. If the arm doent move freely then the VNT part inside the turbo is clogged up with soot and has stopped it working correctly. What tens to happen is the jam open, you get lag but then full boost, the ECU detects over boost and shuts it down.

It can be cleared by a god run but normally req's a new turbo.
