Xenon headlamp washers too powerful!

Featured Replies

I have the headlamp washers that come out of the bumper for my xenon lights and every time they activate they send a fine mist of windscreen fluid down the wings of the car, and I end up with small water droplets on my front windows (and sometimes even on the rear windows). Are all headlamp washers this powerful or do mine need adjusting when I take it in for a service?

mines is the same, its a right pain when you have just cleaned it. :giggle:

Mine are the same, I adjusted the delay on VCDS so I can now use my windscreen washers for a little longer and still not activate my headlight washers B)

ahh that sounds interesting?

I have disabled mine. I looked like an @ss spraying pedestrians on my first sprays and then on every fifth spray was a waste of fluid. With all offroad driving I do, I have never had a dirty xenon, if yes I wipe them by hand.

Don't forget that with the new, current MOT if they are fitted they have to work.

They have to be powerful, as they need to blast any dirt that has accumulated on the headlights off (a bit like mini jet washes). My old Octavia, and the Superb I have just sold were both the same. My Audi with Xenon plus is different, the bonnet is so long that the water does not as fas as the screen but it also goes everywhere.

If they were not powerful they would not clear the dirt.. :wonder:

No need to disable them, pull the wiper stalk to wash the windscreen but release it quickly before pulling it again and holding it for the required time.

The first quick pull temporarily disables the headlight washers whilst the second longer pull allows you to clean the windscreen.

Some claim that this doesn't work but it does on both my 2007 vRS and 2008 Scout.

This works fine on my 08 Elegance. I use this trick daily as I motorway commute in the dark.

As well as the above link to alter the delay time via VCDS you can also alter the time they come on for - so with those two settings most people should be able to achieve a setup they're happy with :)

Doesn't work on FL's, just like setting the delay :(

You've tried those VCDS steps then, to alter the delay time on the FL?

Bah, that's another thing for Ross-Tech to look at then, for the FL. Have you been in touch and sent them a scan file?

No, i haven't actually, just going off what i have read on here - i need to reinstall VCDS as i have screwed up the driver so doesn't work at the moment, but i will have a look.

Only the pre facelift models can be coded that way.

The interim model (facelifted facia but the old nose) and the full facelifted model cant be coded anymore.

All you can is code it out so it doesnt work at all.

Had mine coded with a 3 sec delay, long enough to clean the windshield the first time without washing the whole car.

that's a very useful tip! thanks for that

Having said this, apart from clearing dirty headlights I do find this feature an extremely effective tool to get bumper huggers of my back! Produces an enormous cloud of water.

I was driving through Holland last summer and people there drive right up your *rs even if there is no space to move out of the way - so aggressive. obviously keen to get to next 10 mile traffic jam as quickly as possible.

I suspect that this might not work on your Octavia as it is a 2011 (therefore facelift model), check post #13.

It works on the pre-FL models.

Do you have xenon headlights on your Scout? I know that the Scout gets headlight washers as standard irrespective of if you specify xenon's or not but I wondered if this 'tip' might work on the FL but only on non-xenon equipped models?

hmmm - i missed post #13. i will check it out and report back

My Scout doesn't have the Xenons

I know in the UK it is compulsory to have headlight washers with xenons..

But if anyone wants to remove them would just like to say that I would be really interested in buying the entire kit. emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Highly unlikely... I know but Id rather take a chance emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

It's not just Xenons! My humble Elegance with conventional halogen headlights sends out a massive spray which seems to go everywhere. Even before reading this thread I had wondered about how to disable them or at any rate decrease the frequency at which they operate. I assume it is not fixable with maxidot?

Beats me as to why anybody would want to disable this function!

Think there's quite a few reasons listed above....
