Boot/Tailgate bike carrier/rack

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've searched the web and couldn't find any bike carrier/rack that fit well to the Skoda Superb II Saloon. I'm looking for a none too bar carrier such as the Saris that use straps but I'm afraid that it will not fit the Superb as the bottom straps will have no mounting metal plate to connect to: In the Superb II we have a plastic silver line which will probably break if the straps will apply pressure to it.

Any thoughts? Tow bar is out of the question as the car is leased and I don't want to invest too much in a fixture in a car which I need to return in two and a half years.

Moshe

I'm not sure if this will work as I don't have a superb. But I use roof bars and Thule 591 bike carriers. Absoloutley brilliant to use and Very secure and stable for bikes.

Hope this helps a little...

Actually I already have a 591 and thule roof bar but apparently there is no good fixture to the roof (no rails in the saloon no fix points)

Stick 'em on the roof. Aleways the best place, I reckon. They may not have conventional fixing points but the Superb hatch still has them and Skoda sell roof bars and cycle carriers etc. See page 88 of the latest (UK) owners manual...this has to refer to the hatch as the estate has rails.

See page 18 of http://www.skoda.co.uk/GBR/Documents/Brochures/Accessories/accessories_superb.pdf

Thule also make their own feet if you have the rails (754). See http://www.thule.com/en/GB/Products/Base-Racks/Feet/Thule-Rapid-System-754

Hope this helps

I'm looking for a rear bike rack too. Using a roofbox already so can't put them there and can't have a towbar as its a company car. Any suggestions?

Saris Bones?

It just so happens I have one in my garage going spare for a reasonable offer.....

Well used 3 bike version, but one of the retainers is damaged so can only really carry 2 bikes.

The 3 bike version has an extra top leg to the 2 bike version so is more secure when fitted IMHO.

Funny you should mention that, that's exactly the one I just bought. It says its not compatible with my Superb though. :-(

Seem to be listed as compatible with estates only.

I have the tow ball mounted Thule 923 three bike carrier. Quite expensive, but well worth the investment as it is probably one of the best.

One warning though...be very careful how you mount the bikes and use padding(tied on cloths or whatever) in the right places to minimise any chance of contact between the bikes and the rack.

Also, I assumed that the electric tailgate on my superb combi would be automatically disabled when it detected that something was plugged in. Not so  .

I feel like I am treating my key like it's a lit piece of dynamite when I get out of the car with the rack on, just in case I accidentally press the tailgate open button.

Especially since it looks like my spiked flat pedals would be the first to contact the car. Scary!

I thought about towbar items but unfortunately I can't have them as I have a detachable towbar

So far the one I have found that suits is Peruzzo Venezia it seams to work with my car and others two therefore when car goes (ever!!) then the rack doesn't have too

Anyone already had experience of this rack??

If that's your only reason for excluding towbar version, I'd rather put my faith in a detachable towbar mounted solution that an strap mounted frame. Personal choice of course.

I use a detachable towbar (Skoda supplied and fitted) with a 75kg limit.  We have a Thule 929 + 4th bike extension, which is within the limit with four bikes.  The Atera Strada DL4 weighs 14.4kg, +2.5kg for the 4th bike extender and gets good reviews on the Yeti forum.
