From BMW to Superb

Featured Replies

As a newcomer I thought I'd introduce myself a bit more and explain why I bought a Superb. My previous car was a BMW 1-series. In the beginning I loved it but as time went on I realized that while it was very nice to drive it was a deeply impractical car. The interior space and boot are a joke to be honest. Furthermore the ride was much to harsh for my liking. Also I found the steering unnecessarily heavy when parking for instance. So I started looking around for other cars. In the beginning I was convinced that I wanted a Mercedes or a BMW and for a long time I wanted to buy a Mercedes C-class estate. But I soon realized that the interior space of that car wasnt much better than that in the 1-series. So I started looking at alternatives in roughly the same price range and came across the Superb. Honestly, in the beginning, I thought that coming from a BMW, the Superb would be dead boring to drive. But from the first moment I drove it I loved it! Nice light steering, much softer ride than the BMW and loads of interior space. Many of my friends thought I was crazy going from a BMW to a Skoda but once they have seen the car or sat in it they realize that a Skoda is not so bad after all!

Nice to see that some people can see past the badge emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Way better than a Merc! Welcome

Welcome!

On a Superb the indicators are on the left side column stalk, push up if you want to turn right, and down if you want to turn left! :giggle:

Welcome!

I have a similar experience, only with SAAB.

Now when SAAB is not producing cars anymore, I had to choose another brand which would suit my needs. SuperB is really spacious (even compared to Audi A6) so I chose it. The only disadvantage I experienced was the delivery time. But the car itself is just awesome.

Of course my SAAB friends were really upset when they found out that I had chosen Skoda. They thought I'd choose either Audi or Volvo. But when they saw the car live and sit in it, they found out that it's not bad at all. As a matter fact they told me that if they'd now have to choose any other car brand, SuperB would be at least in their top 3.

Skoda has its...hmm not so pleasant past, and older people will remember rear mounted engine 120 model which was terrible but current Skoda models don't have anything common with those ones - except the brand. But the prejudice against the brand will lead lots of people to go to Audi or Volvo :dull:

Another german scalp for your dealer!!

The biggest chalenge facing skoda is getting people to simply sit in the car. Once they do, they generally buy!!

I had a c class merc and traded it for a superb 170DSG and love it. It's like a s class merc but a fifth of the price and running costs!!

The thing that did it for me was that I discovered that a Superb 1.8 TSI Elegance DSG was about the same price as my BMW when I bought it. And I really couldn't see why the BMW was worth so much more money. Of course it is rear wheel drive and has more advanced suspension and better handling. But I am not a skilled enough driver to appreciate these things. The things I did notice was that the Superb was quiteter, more comfortable, infinitely more practical and came with a lot more equipment.

That's exactly why the Superb is selling well, it just gets on with being a comfy mile-eater, without the pretension of other marques

And I really couldn't see why the BMW was worth so much more money.

It's because of the brand. Same thing goes with Audi, Mercedes Benz etc.

Skoda has been considered of a brand "behind the iron curtain" and they don't have..err...so wonderful past until VAG Corporation bought them. That's why they're cheaper than those premium segment automobile brands.

ordered my new skoda superb elegance estate dsg 1.8tsi last month, new to the brand having previously been a honda man, cant believe how well specced the elegance estate was,and vat free, couldnt justify the price diff between the diesel as only do short trips and didnt want probs with the dpf, ordered mine with sunset ,park assist and heated rear seats, comes in march cant wait,ps hello to everyone

Ditto - from Merc to Superb after a test drive. Absolutely no regrets

I'm trading in my 3 series BMW for an Elegance hatch (170 DSG). When I look at the price of a new BMW, Audi, Merc, or even a Passat to the same spec as an Elegance, particularly with the 20% offer, then it seems the only sensible thing to do. I expect I'll get used to the styling!

I've been quoted a 12 week delivery, so I probably won't see it until April.

forget the cost if you put all the makes along side each other the superb elegance comes out best.i have just bought another superb this time the estate with all the toys i did look at the E class estate and BMW estate but when you start to look closely there are so many toys missing in the other makes no heated rear seats-passenger seats manual-no sd card reader the list goes on and on.the skoda superb is the best car all round.

Swapped BMW 525d SE state for Superb Elegance CR170 4x4 estate four months ago. I have no regrets, the Superb beats the Beemer in every department except very high speed cornering which, as my hair has gone grey, I no longer indulge in. I also tow a caravan and the Skoda is a better towcar.

The car is very well screwed together, no squeaks or rattles, and is more economical by about 10mpg. My only adverse comments are the long wait for it and the dealer whose handover was pathetic, the salesman seemed to know very little about the car.

Chris

Welcome bro!

I used to drive a Merc E and BWM 523i - Skodas are underrated sleepers. My whole family loves it, from space wise to pure practicality.

Meking the transition from a BMW 1 series to a Superb must have been a life changing experience.

Yes, and in a good way in almost all respects. The only downside to the Superb is the higher fuel consumption compared to my BMW which was a diesel. I am also a member of a BMW forum, and the reactions from BMW-fans when you tell them that you have bought a Skoda are very interesting. Often something along the lines of "I guess it is an ok car if you are only interested in transport from A to B and don't like driving". Some people who have driven it complain about the tire noise which is sooooo much better insulated in a BMW or a Mercedes. I have driven the new E-class (my parents have one) and I honestly don't feel that there is that much of a difference in noise.

  • 1 month later...

I hope my decision turns out to be a good one.

About 3 weeks ago I went to view a Yeti (I tow a caravan) with the wife who said she didn't like the look of it even before we got there!!!!!! The salesman then showed me a Superb Elegance Twindoor 170 manual 4x4 which just happened to be in the showroom - I was gob-smacked and after test driving one (admittedly it was the Combi version) I was hooked.

As the Superb I have agreed to buy is a showroom car (not a demonstrator) and as I have been assured it is a 2012 model (Steel Grey) - I decided not to wait months for a new build - and so pick it up next week.

I have searched and searched and searched the internet for reviews, videos on YouTube, owners comments etc and cannot find a single negative report. I tow with a 2.0TDi 140 VW Tiguan at the moment (which is a great towcar), about 40mpg solo and 25mpg when towing - I just hope the decision I've taken proves to be a good one. A replacement Tiguan with the same specs as the Skoda would have cost me almost £10,000 more taking into consideration the curent 20% special offer from Skoda! no-brainer really.

The more I think about it, the more I feel that the BMW 1-series (I am talking about the outgoing model here) is grossly overpriced. It is supposed to be a premium car. I really don't see what is so premium about it. In my opinion premium cars are supposed to be quiet, comfortable and sporty at the same time and have a smooth drive train. The 1-series fails in all of these categories. It is certainly not quiet when it comes to engine and wind noise. The ride is downright hard with the runflat tires. Sporty? Sure it has very quick steering and good steering response, but due to its narrow track it feels pretty wobbly sometimes and uneven roads can even trigger the ESP system if you are not careful on the throttle. The drive train in my car (118d with 2 liter diesel) wasn't excatly smooth. The gearstick vibrated severly if you left it in gear with the clutch down at a red light. And making smooth downshifts was almost impossible. The are only three things I miss from my BMW.

  • The climate control system had a "rest" function, which maintained the temperature in the car for 15 minutes after you have turned the engine off. Good to have if you have to wait in the car during the winter.
  • The car had an electronic dip-stick for the oil. No need to open the hood to check the oil level.
  • The ESP system was honestly smoother in the BMW. The one in the Skoda is a bit harsher in the way it reduces the speed. In the BMW you barely noticed when the system was active. On the other hand the Skoda, being FWD, is much less tail happy than the BMW so ESP rarely comes on. Driving a 1-series in Sweden during the winter means frequent ESP-light blinking.

You need to activate XDS :hi:

I also traded in my BMW (having owned several from new) for my Superb , My last being a BMW 123d M sport coupe which was a blast and had an amazing engine due to being twin turbo'ed. Due to getting two large dogs (alaskan malamutes) I had to get a more practical car.

Looked at new 5 series estate/x3

Audi A4/Q5/A4 All road

Someone mentioned the Skoda and I went to check it out and was immediately impressed with it, I do miss my 1 series for pure fun and acceleration but the Skoda is a superb cruiser and very practical and I don't have the back issues I had when I had various BMW's (run flats/sport supension),

I went for a fully kitted out Diesel 170 4x4 elegance estate model.

Had it almost a year, things I don't like about it:

Colour I ordered it in - Aqua Blue (after a year I really don't like it, wish I ordered it in Black or metallic grey). This is my fault as It was hard to find one in the flesh so I took a gamble.

Brakes - They are like sponges in mine, when they wear out I'm going to look at putting better brake pads on

Heating - Takes forever to warm up plus the whole heating system is a bit rubbish, on cold days if I have the air recycling on the whole car mist up. So I have a choice of choking from fumes or not being able to see...... never had this one in a car before, If I have it on anything other then auto for too long it mist up. It may be an issue with mine that I may need to get looked at.

Loud Speaker system - Quite honestly rubbish, I don't have my sound loud but I like good quality, any hint of bass in a song and the speakers start to distort, my advice would be to pay for after market upgrades as the skoda one is pants.

It's certainly not a looker, I refer to it as the barge, as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I thought the 1M series coupe is stunning, others think it looks like a pig

All of the above is quite minor , the thing with the Skoda is generally it's just a very good all round car.

Despite all my grumbles you can't really fault it in what it does, given I got 29k spec car with a discount for 24k it's an absolute no brainer. In comparison the BMW's and Audi's were coming out between 32 - 40K in the spec I wanted. I'm also debating keeping this for 5 years due to the fact it's so pratical and comfortable, usually I will get shot of a car after two years.

I had the bass distortion fixed two weeks ago, under warranty (1 yr old): turned out the window winding mechanism was too close to something else (outer door panel?) and vibrated against it. Some padding fixed it. Replacing the speakers wouldn't have :-)

A side note: At first, they took a CD with a song with some bass I had complained about, put it in another car and (so they said) heard the same buzzing, so faulted the CD ... I then decided to replicate the buzzing using a constant tone input into the aux - I used a laptop PC to generate a tone, search for the right frequency (70Hz did it, in my case) and once I had it, I let them loose on the car. 20 minutes later, there were smiles all around.

The heating in mine is actually better than the BMW. Comes on a lot quicker, but my Superb is a petrol which may explain things. I only had the standard stereo (BMW business) and the Skoda system is a lot better. Although I agree that you have to be careful with the bass.
