cambelt change.

Recommended Posts

Quoted 350 quid for cambelt change but no water pump from my local dealer, or 250 for cambelt and waterpump from local indy have full dealer service history up to now..what would you do ?

Also just reading customer promise on skoda website says car washed after a service never had mine washed yet.

This is always the case unfortunately, thankfully mine had a timing belt done just before i bought it

Iv also got full dealership history and i dont want to taint this, is it under warranty? this might infringe it if something goes wrong.

Dont bother with the wash, i always ask them not to bother, they use harsh chemicals and if your like me and wax the car this will all be taken off, your not missing out on much! (i used to work as a dealership valeter and the cars are not looked after)

I'd got to main dealers, I had mine done at JKM performance in Portsmouth, I opted for a metal impeller instead of the OEM water pump, even though in the breakdown I spent a small fortune on the correct VAG anti-freeze a trip to the main dealer for service recently and they said the concentration was dangerously low, they definitely scrimped there but the rest I was happy with, anyway I digress.

I wholly recommend replacing the water pump at the same time....... There's a post on here of somebody having a new cam- belt recently but the water pump seized = destroyed engine, replacing the water pump at the same time is just as important IMHO.

Id haggle with the main dealer and get them to put in a water pump. The labour is not much as its only 3 bolts they have to undo and re tighten when fitting the new pump. The pump itself is about £30ish to buy. Not a great deal of money. You could always be like me and fit the cambelt and waterpump yourself. Overall cost me under £150 and about 8 hours of work. I knew then that it would be done to my standard and everything fitted correctly.

It's the dealer who said they don't replace waterpump just inspect bearings unless I ask for it to be done ,I thought the pump was included in price with the cambelt it is at indys.

That is because indy's know it is a good idea to do it at the same time from experience.

Most main dealers very rarely see a car over 4 years old for a service so aren't that bothered.

Ask them how they intend to 'inspect' bearings with the pump in situ? What they mean is spin it and if it isn't seized or noisy leave it alone.

Replace it - it should only be another £40 or so.

Well if it were me I would go the for the cheaper option. My belts due a change and I have found an local independant VAG specialist, mines going there for the belt and future servicing. I have always taken my Octavia VRS to my local Skoda garage for servicing and never been very happy with the way I have been treated, the service department is useless.

I would also like to say that buy the car was a pleasure (not purchased from where I had it serviced) but their after care is awful and they have lost one customer.

Regards

Paul.

I believe that all work carried out and parts supplied and fitted by the Dealer guaranteed for 2 years

Correct.

I'd go dealer and ask them to do the water pump for the original price, see how much they want your business. Say you can get it done for £100 less by an Indy but you would like a dealer to do it so meet halfway kinda thing. If they are quiet like a lot of us are they should bite your arm off.

Excuse me if I'm wrong to say but, are you not still covered with Warranty if done by an Independant as long as the parts used are Genuine VAG. Book stamped and still original.

The interval is 40K or 4 years.

Had mine done at my dealer and cost me £425.They replaced the water pump as per job and replaced the 2 engine mount stretch bolts all in the fixed price.

Mine is a 1.9Tdi.

Yours isn't a vRS, different engine codes at different times have different intervals so you could be confusing things.

Besides I don't think I've ever seen a TDI of any guise with a 40k interval, four years yes but not 40k. On a MK2 Octavia that would put the belt before the major service which is highly unlikely.
