Yeti 4x4 DSG takes on the big boys and impresses

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just got back from a 4x4 training day at Slindon in West Sussex. There were 2 Disco's, a defender 90, a Jeep Cherokee and a Toyota Land Crusier Colorado, and Elsie.

Apart from ground clearance issues, the Yeti impressed everybody. I just had to keep to the high ground around the deep ruts, leave the deep water to others () and occasionally part up and jump in one of the other vehicles, where I knew there was no way I would get through. I did get beached at one point in the same place as the Land Cruiser and had to be towed off, but I was then able have another go at an angle, which worked. I did expect to be beached, as it was very soft ground it was okay.

Elsie coped with all the mud and water and axle articulation thrown at her with aplomb!bcdc4118-0b25-8b16.jpg

I will put up some videos over the next few days.

Great stuff.

Look forward to the clips.

Good show for the yeti then mike  , the ride hight will not let it go where the big boys go, but we all know that will be its limiting factor as you did and took the right option got a lift, Mmmm bigger wheels longer springs and shocks :giggle: keep it up Mike

Hi Mike, glad you had a good day and other saw how accomplished the Yeti really is

If there is another day like that in Slindon, let me know as I'm only a bit further along the coast in Hove. emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

Would have been nice to meet you in person.

I've heard similar stories from other owners. I'm pleased that she's done you proud! Looking at the yeti I don't think many would have her down as a decent off reader!

They have open days every month, next one tomorrow. You just turn up, pay £30 and play all day!

The training was organised by Surrey 4x4 Response for its members.

Hi Mike - and well done indeed, to both of you.

Were there ever any occasions when you were genuinely thinking "Ooooh, dung, wish I hadn't done this!"???

That second picture really looks kinda scary, and not just the angle of that wheel off the floor, but the headlong dive into the abyss!

Or - was it all simply ruddy good fun testing your car's abilities and limitations? Roll on those vids from you, because if I recall correctly you have in-car recording devices that give a real feel for the occasion.

Well done, er, Scree-hopper, Mud-plugger, Puddle-wader........oh the names for you from now on!!

Hi Mike,

glad you had fun on your training event; and EtH wanted to play this time around :giggle: plus well done in proving what the Monster can do on the muddy stuff B)

There was only one time I regretted which was going up a very steep hill and I beached at the top. I couldn't avoid a deep hole at the top, the gap between the banks was about 6" either side and I forgot about the hole. I had to be pulled up. I might have damaged the rrp panel to the inside of the o/s sill. Elsie is a little plastered at the moment and she hasn't sobered up yet

They really climb well. One of the guys took videos of all of us climbing, and Elsie climbed up just about the furthest!

I have so many short videos to choose from. I have about 6 hours from either end, but that does include stationary parked up time whilst we took it in turns to do stuff. We were also trained on how to winch a vehicle.

You are right George, HD cameras front and rear.

I had a look at some of them last night and you can see the axle articulation of the vehicle in front, a Disco, and I just follow it round in my Tonka toy

Here is a taster. Taking a while to process all the videos and make some sense of them.

Here is another one. Watch what was happening with the Disco......I followed that. By the way Disc'os bounce rather a lot.

The twanging sound is the CB aerial on the roof. it is about 60" long. The other noises might be hitting the mud due to lack of ground clearance....

And another....There is a massive pot hole right at the top, so I have to straddle it. None of the vehicles with me managed to pass this cross axle test, even with all their fancy diff locks.emoticon-0140-rofl.gif and the 110 Defender was a serious piece of kit. We all had to straggle this pothole.

I hope to see or even get hold of the video of me going up at some point.

Very jealous!!! We really do need to arrange a day like this JUST with Yetis and no BEACHING! hehehe

Thanks. From this link http://www.4x4driving.co.uk/ownersdays.html they have owners' days. For £20 a pop too... But with set routes. I'd like them to do a proper safe Yeti route though. Wonder if they will oblige?

I'm sure he would. They have 2 venues, Slindon and Boxgrove. Boxgrove is the one with the cheaper rates. I wonder why.

Here is one of a discovery following me. It should be in the centre of the frame, but I'm going sideways down the track...emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Here is one where I'm going over a soft sandy bank. Goes on to 3 wheels...the in car video from the post on no. 7 above.

Superb videos, Looks like you had lots of fun.

I wonder how far off road you can go in a 2wd Yeti? Anyone tried?

I think a 2wd Yeti will get pretty far as long as it is not too slippery. It still has the ground clearance, and short overhangs both front and rear, so as long as you manage to keep the front wheels (preferrably both of them) on something that is fairly solid you should be OK. I wouldn't go into the deepest mudholes though :)

So who's going try this

As soon as you start to go uphill on anything slightly slippery you are screwed due to the weight transfering to the rear. Cue lots of wheelspin.

The only way round this is flying up slopes like your hair is on fire, which usually is a recipe for disaster.

Broke a halfshaft or two in a Land Rover and had to get about like this.

I wouldn't want a 2wd Yeti on a play site which is typically muddy.

One of the reasons for a 4x4 on order. :)

Certainly looks like fun emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Good videos too and nice to see how accomplished the Yeti is.

Instructor's hat on.

You stop at the bottom, and walk up the hill assessing the slope, and top run-out.

Return to car and turn around.

Reverse up hill.
