Help VRS won't rev past 2000

Featured Replies

Driving home this evening, when the power dropped off, ASR and engine light came on and car wouldnt go past 2000 rev, in the end i'd to get a tow.

Got it home and done a scan, the faults below came back on the reader:

17581 P1173 Throttle Actuation Potentiometer Sign

16955 P0571 Cruise/Brake Switch (A) Circ Malfunction

17987 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Adaptation Not Started

18047 P1639 Accelera.Pedal Pos.Sensor 1+2 Range/Performance

I tried clearning these errors but they cane stright back again as soon as I started her up.

Has anyone come across a simalar issue before?

The car is drive by wire, I would start by checking the wiring connector to the pedal box as that is where the fault seems to be.

ive seen this exact same thing before written about on another forum

it turned out to be a wiring issue with the o2 sensor wich caused a spike on the ecu !!!!

that car needed new o2 sensor and ecu !!!

thanks guys- will have a look at the wiring and O2 sensor tomorrow in the daylight

Is the brake lights working?

The switch can cause the engine not to rev, sure I read it on here

Is the brake lights working?

yes brake lights are working

the dash has the orange ECU, ASR and engine lights displayed when running

For the sake of £10 I'd put a genuine brake light switch on it - dealers have them on the shelf

why when he says the lights are working????

check the o2 sensor wiring and plug disconnect and clean connections hopefully no spike as that can bugger the ecu !!!

Just wondering, the brake switch is a duel circuit one wonder if its not the brake light part not working? I know when I got a new one from vw they said it was an updated part

Just an idea if the 02 sensor turns out to be ok

Brake light switch has 2 circuits, 4 wires, one switch for brakes lights, the second switch for ecu signal.

Faulty switch = no ASR or cruise function (hitting the brake pedal knocks off cruise).

Thanks guys, I've picked up a new brake light switch - i'll swap it in later on and let ye know how I get on.

The O2 sensor and other items such as the throttle pedal get their power from the ECU. If you short out an O2 sensor in a specific way it takes down part of the ECU, without giving an O2 sensor error. All those items which are powered by the same section of the ECU start throwing errors.

missingmyvrs is right in that it can cause ECU damage if left too long.

My money is on the brake switch

Although I may as always, be wrong

fitted a new brake light switch earlier, cleared the faults and ran another scan, it cleared some of the faults but 2 are still showing up:

17950/P1542/005442 - Angle Sensor 1 for Throttle Actuator (G187): Implausible Signal

Possible Symptoms

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active

Possible Causes

Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty

Power Supply for Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty

Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty

Possible Solutions

Check Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) See Measuring Value Blocks (MVB), usually MVB 062

Going back into the mists of time:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/27065-5-fault-codes/

Thanks m8, I'm seeing the very similar issues as that chap described:

EPC and Traction controll lights on, loss of power and the car won't rev properly

for him, it turned out to be:

"Turned out to be a trapped wire to the ignition system"

Gonna have a look at the wiring around the ignition, ECU and O2 sensors

Sorted now, brought it down to my m8's garage and he reset the throttle body, reset the errors and they havn't come back, she's running fine now so far at least for the time being :)

So changing the brake switch and reseting the throttle body seems to have done the trick, thanks for yer help getting it going again lads.
