Std Alternator? 90A or 120A

Featured Replies

Just a quick one, is the std Alt in the vRS a 90A one or a 120A one?

I am wanting to sort out the lights dimming when you open/shut the windows. I am thinking its due to the Alt not being strong enough. My car has done it since new and its always anoyed me.

Also does anyone know the PN for the R32/LCR PAS pump?

Do the lights dim as the window is moving, or only once it has reached the limit of travel?

My TDI does the latter and I think that is normal behaviour. If your car does it all the time, then I would be checking for poor earth connections.

IMHO the alternator is there to charge up the battery, and not directly supply power to the car to enable it to function.

now you say that, it does it when you have the windoes up and try them to make sure they are up. its the initial use of the windows that makes the lights dim.

TBH everything works jsut this slight dimming I cant stand, just thought if there was a more powerful alt on there it could keep the battery power up even when there is that initial surge of power use.

was also thinking it could be the battery lol as it is the original.

but its doen it for as long as I can remember. \you know what skoda are like tho, anything to keep costs down.

Mine used to do it, whenever you move the switch for the windows (I remember like you noticing it more when the windows are fully up and you try to put them up even more). I think the window motor must put enough load on the battery to dim the lights. I replaced the original battery on mine with a Halfords one after a few years as I had a problem with the central locking which knackered the old battery but I can't remember if it still did it with a new battery or not :(

Varta do a heavy duty silver one thats suitable for the VRS, maybe a member on here who's recently fitted an upgraded battery can test their windows and see what happens?

lol, cheers

Not that its that much of a biggy as the car isnt getting used and wont be for soem time, really it works so shoulodnt really do anything to change it but if its something simple then why not. Car wont ever be used as a daily again, only as a toy/fun weekender and something to keep me busy. bit like a big mecano set lol :giggle:

standard is 90a, you can get a 120 or a 150 off a diesel mk4 golf or passat iirc

Might be worth checking and cleaning the battery earth on the body engine earth to body!! could be voltage drop due to poor earth!! voltage I think out of alternator should be 13.5 >14.7 volts, are you getting that out of back of alternator? then are you getting that at the battery or very close to what the alternator is kicking out. Also try it under load!! IE with lights on
