Would you pay double road tax if......

Featured Replies

Hi,

On the drive to work i thought to myself "id pay double my road tax if all the roads became as smooth as a race track.

My drive to work is filled with rough road, pot holes and speed bumps and im sat there thinking......where the hell does my road tax go.

Anyone else feel the same?

I'd just be happy if they spent the money collect in road tax on building and maintaining roads.

But it's been a long time since that happened.

In answer to "Where does my road tax go?". It goes to the coffers of the Exchequer along with all the other taxes and is not kept seperate.

You know what, I think I would do too.

Every day on my way into and from work, I must look drunk to other drivers as I avoid potholes, and even worse, the bodge repair jobs that are now worse that they originally were.

Im sure if the government turned round tomorrow, and said petrol is getting increased by a couple of pence a litre, which will be guaranteed to be spent improving the road network, then im sure very few people would object.

I would. I'd rather they took my VED and guaranteed THAT would be spent improving the roads, rather than it just getting lost in a pot of other taxes and frittered away. Otherwise we're sort of paying twice for the same thing, IMO.

Alternatively that VED was scrapped altogether, and the price of petrol went up (which seems to be a common opinion on the e-petitions site) so that people who use the roads more implicitly pay more than those who do very little annual milage.

Double ditto,

I think a lot of it is down to the differing priorities of some local authorities.

Some of the local roads, especially London Borough of Hillingdon, are appalling. The difference in the maintained standard of roads is quite noticeable when travelling from London borough of Harrow (where I live) into LB of Hillingdon.

The latter seem quite happy to spend loads of dosh earmarked for road maintenance on other issues e.g. installing zebra crossings where there is no demand or for the apparent benefit of a local restuarant. Installing traffic lights and speed restriction signs apparently benefiting a local riding stable.

Whereas the main road on a main bus route(Joel street) is left to decay in a terrible condition. I think that LB are on a "Establishment/nanny knows best ego trip".

Interestingly, I've noticed on my recent holidays in Western France, that, with the exception of some backstreets in old towns, you rarely find unrepaired roads - admittedly some of the "C" country roads are badly repaired, but you never find the gapping pot holes that are unrepaired for months - like the one at the traffic light controlled filter left turn into Rickmansworth Road from Dduck's Hill Road(At the perimeter of Mount Vernon Hospital)

You wonder what the Borough road engineers are doing ?

Yet all these local authorities are top heavy with directorships and management structures that 35 years ago weren't there and some might say they delivered abetter service then.

Disgraceful.

I kno it can be a debate about where the money goes now but I would pay £500 a year if all the roads were perfect. No need for speed bumps, traffic calming etc just educate drivers.

I said this morning that cyclists should have to be insured and pay road tax as they use it. Tax should be £30 a year to ride on the highways and that money would then fund cycle lanes etc. Car drivers should not have to fund everything.

I think the best thing they can do is reduce the number of local councils they have, because each one comes with it's own admin dept and management structure. Rather than having 4 or 5 per county, have one at most per county unless.

Have centralised admin provided, which they can call on as needed. Certainly don't have all the money spent on keeping a few council managers in overly paid jobs.

Agree I think they should scrap VED and put a couple of pence per litre on fuel plus ring fence money for transport. Straight away every vehicle in the country has paid VED, no need to waste money sending out reminders, fines, tax discs etc. Also could free up police time and budgets by not chasing untaxed cars. Would be fair as some one who does a 1000 miles a year would pay a lot less that someone who does 100,000 miles where as under current system they could pay the same or less. Plus spending the money on the roads surely increases construction and jobs plus improves transport infrastructure = benefits for whole economy and smooth roads :D. However they will probably never do it because it would mean a loss of jobs in some areas :S.

Agreed

Scarborough Council cover whitby and it doesnt half show! Drive through scarborough and they are always doing road works, improving the roads and keeping ontop of their roads, even the buses are pretty much brand new. whitby get attended to when the pot hole is so deep people get lost down them and all of our public services are the worst of the worse, the bus that is still doing the runs is the same bus i used to catch when i was about 10..no joke!

So what's that an 11 year old bus? Haha

Yep! V reg and my tin opener has more power then that thing

The whole fleet it about that age, the newest one being about a 52 plate..the smell is somewhat like death!

But the worse part is as people know Whitby it not a large town, infact you can get from one end to the other in about 4 mins and these buses charge £1.70 per trip..buut it gets better, even if you get off at the fist stop, about half a mile up the road its still £1.70 :o

Don't think I'd pay double. Tbh we pay enough already and it should all be spent on the roads. They should resurface a decent section if they ever dig it up imo. That's where a lot of the potholes start

Lol count yourself lucky

I used to catch the bus to school. For the first couple of years, it was an old S reg...i.e. 77/78

Then they upgraded..... to a V reg....79/80

I see the bus occasionally on my way to work, it's now an E reg.. 87/88

Luxury!!
