Satnav and PDC

Featured Replies

Hi. I'm thinking about ordering my car with nexus satnav system, but is it possible to see how close you are with the PDC like it's possible on the Stream and Audience radios?

Although I don't have (or know) the Nexus system, I do have an aftermarket sat-nav headunit in my car. But I'm puzzled as to what you mean with PDC (do you mean TMC?) and Stream and Audience radios?

Nexus(MFD2) is the satnav from Skoda. PDC(Park Distance Control, i think it's called) is the parksensor. Stream and Audience is the new raidios in octavia. And with those it's possible to see how far/close you are to thing! Wonder if the satnav can do the same.

Ah! That makes a bit more sense :D

I strongly doubt it as GPS is only accurate to a few meters, which can mean the difference between parking on the edge off a cliff or not ;)

And the other way around, PDC would only consist of a few local distance sensors measuring the distance between the car and an object no further than 1 or 2 meters away.

What he means is does the satnav screen switch over to showing the output from the parking sensors as teh screens on non-satnav radios do. I don't know as my elegance has the stream radio that does show the PDC display.

Maybe I should visit the dealer more often... Learn a new thing everyday!

Ignore me ;)

Maybe my english is bad, or you don't know that much about the new octavia. Take a look on this picture, and you will hopefully see what I meen. :)

No you do not get the display  you do still get the audio bleep. I think this is a major pain but what can you do if you want the sat nav

John

but what can you do if you want the sat nav
Go for a Pcket PC based Sat Nav system instead. C

Sorry mate, the sat nav is not the most user friendly unit around altho  ugh it does its job well. Park Distance Control is only audio not audio/visual like the Audience and Stream radios. If I were you, I'd go for the maxidot and steering wheel remote switch combination rather than sat nav and invest in a TOM TOM or PDA based system which tend to be touch screen operation and easier to use.

More functional, I'd say...
Fully agree. I have the Garmin iOue 3600, Palm based rather than Pocket PC.

Built in antenna and a very neat "bean bag" car mount that just packs away in the glove box when not in use.

I can see the merits of audio PDC, but why visual, should you not be looking where your parking incase a daydreaming pedestrian or similar decides they are going to cross behind you.

Audio PDC  Visual :thumbdwn:

I find that both audio and visual very useful.

I frequently use the visual display because the PDC is so darned sensitive that it often is bleeping because I am at a slight angle to the car in the adjacent parking bay. This is particularly true when reversing your car from a tight entry while it is straightening up into the space. Being able to confirm that it is a single corner that is sensing something is very useful.

The visual indicator is also very useful for distance, especially when reversing towards bollards or low walls that are not visible through the rear window. Similarly for cars that have low or drooping bonnets.

A daydreaming pedestrian will set off both the audible and visual alerts.

Fair enough, I was not really aware of how the visual systems work, but I am always cautious of anything that could distract a driver (The biker in me talking) and I often wonder "how did we manage" without it in the past :)

Satnav is fantastic, of course, I would be (pardon the pun) lost without it :)

Tom Tom 300 rules.

Saw that picture of the stream radio. Mine does that...isn't it the balance setting for the stereo?

Another nice touch is the fact that you can have the radio blaring out (especially if you've got the audience like me) and once in reverse it drops the volume to quiet(ish) levels (so you can hear the bleeps).
