Buying a vRS tomorrow, what are the main things to look for?

Featured Replies

Looking at a 51 plate vRS tommorrow, and as it's a 400 mile round trip - If I like it I will be buying it, so I need to know what to look for. (I have tried to search for similar topics but to no avail, so I would appreciate any advice :))

The only vRS I have ever seen or driven before has done 120k, and it drove superbly. Also, I only do about 5k a year, so I'm not really bothered about high mileage, especially if the price is right :)

Details as follows:

1 owner

99k mainly motorway miles

FSH, last service at 96k

New coil packs

Recent continental tyres

I'd consider myself more than just a tyre kicker when it comes to buying cars, but what are the main things to look for specifically on the vRS?

Thanks for any advice

I tend to look out for BMW 328's :D:D:D

Sorry :o As long as it has a service history, the main failing is coil packs.

Well I find the Vrs a very sound car but you do know that the Octavia RS also has a diff problem so there is no harm in checking has the gear box been taking off and if so make sure to ask why it was off.

Also Skoda say that the RS timing belt has to be changed every 180000km witch is approx 112500 miles but they wouldn't give it to me in writing so my advice would be make sure the belt was changed.

Good luck in buying it

The replacement interval for the 'toothed belt for the camshaft drive' is quoted as 180,000km (only 1.8 petrol engines) in the Service Schedule which comes with the car. If it hasn't been changed already I would reduce the price offered by

Just to add to what Denis said, as well as the cam belt check the waterpump has been changed. If it hasn't then get that done asap along with the belt. If either of these go (and they do) then it's likely you'll need a new engine.

Also listen for any knocking from the suspension as if they haven't been replaced then the bushes are likely to be in poor condition, particulary those on the rear axle.

There's also a good chance the DV will be broke and the owner may not even realise, these are only around

Thanks guys. The only thing the seller has pointed out is a slight rattle at certain revs from underneath, sounds like an exhaust heat shield of some sort, so I'll have a good look.

Oh well, that was a no go.

Another day, another vRS tomorrow then.

This Dump valve problem, what are the sysmptoms (assuming no ECU light)?

That's a shame - hope you find another one to go and play with soon :)
