Fumes in the car causing allergic reaction

Featured Replies

Hi All, i have bought Fabia VRS diesel reg 57 in Nov 2011 and now have developed serious allergic reaction on face and neck. My skin is like burned. Anyone has got any idea what it could be? Have read different forums and most people do smell something in their car while I can't smell nothing at all. In Dec 11 have got fire lighter fixed to be able to use satnav. I am driving about 1.5 hrs in the morning and same in the evening every day. Any suggestions would be welcome as I do not know where to start to look.

Have you been to the doctors??

Air con clean?

Doctors mate...

Highly doubt it's the car.

Not trying to be funny but is this your first diesel car? Also, when refuelling do you ever wear the plastic/polythene gloves provided by the garage? i am just wondering if this is maybe just a skin reaction caused by you rubbing your face/neck after refuelling and having traces of diesel on your hands? Just a thought.

If it is causing you concerns though then do as others have suggested and go see your doctor. your health is important.

Been to the doctors, they have not got a clue just telling it is an allergic reaction. It is the car as I have eliminated everything else. Did not drive for 3 days and got better straight away, will try to drive to work on Monday again but really scared of the reaction. If it will get worse again then is not only 100% but 120% the car. Just trying to understand what it could be. I am not using gloves in the petrol station but I am not touching my face or neck as well afterwards, that's for sure. There must be something coming through the air vents as worst affected area is my forehead.

Has the interior been cleaned with anything, maybe something onthe steering wheel / gear stick. Might be worth giving it a thourogh clean, and one of thoese aerosol kits that clean the air con (and most of the interior)

Sounds like a ski mask is required.

I don't quiet follow what you are saying

"In Dec 11 have got fire lighter fixed to be able to use satnav"

I'd sugget you remove the fire lighter as they are usually kerosen based and will be producing lots of nasty volitile compounds.

Beond that try getting the car interior cleaned proffesionaly.

My dermatologist told me a skin allergic reaction can be caused by anything including things that had no prior effect and the cause for 99% is unknown.

As it is appears to be your forehead, how do you have the blower and fan speed set in the car? If it is the car and say you have the air set to screen and on full force I would presume your forehead would be affected suggesting aircon could do with a clean.

As said could also be cleaning agent used on the steering wheel and gear stick outer of the car. Did you stop doing anything else when you stopped using the car.

IF it's the car, then the location of the rash implies it's the AC/vents causing the problem. Try driving with the ac off, vents closed and window open.

This could potentially be a bad mould/fungus build up in the AC system.

I believe Legionnaires can present with a rash.

That's what I initially thought in first post, but he's been checked out by the quack emoticon-0105-wink.gif

try something simple like a air conditioning cleaner and then give the car a clean with anti bac stuff.but most importantly positive thinking.if you're worrying and u think you're going to get a rash next time you drive then guess what....you're going to get a rash

Try to use a anti bacterial wipe before and after driving ?

Could the car have been a pet wagon for the previous owner? You could be having an allergic reaction to cat or dog?

May I ask why do you have a fire lighter in the car!? arn't they pretty solvent? :(

Think he meant he got the cig lighter repaired as it wasn't working before.

Ahh my bad, I did think it was a little odd, as a suggestion maybe take all the seats out and shampoo the whole car out? good luck :)
