Headlight and screen washers

I'm not against clean headlights, I understand the need for them and the legislation regarding the washers, my issue is with the lack of control I have over the cleaning program, see my original post below. Whilst several have pointed out that I am in the minority on here other manufacturers have seen fit to give more control over the wash system.

When my auto lights are on is there anyway to prevent washing the lights every time I just want a quick scoosh on the screen.

In the electronic copy I have, on page 65 it says:

The headlights are being cleaned after the windscreen has been sprayed for the first

time and fifth time, the low beam or main beam are switched on and the windscreen

wiper lever was held in the position 5 -> page 63, fig. 50 for about 1 second.

The implication is that if you hold the stalk in the wash position for less than a second then it won't wash the headlights. But it doesn't actually say that explicity. Pretty much par for the course for the Yeti menual! (Are the other Skoda manuals as idiosyncratic as the Yeti's?)

FWIW I don't have any problem with the car washing its headlights every once in a while. Saves me having to think about doing it.

The manual is less than economical with the truth again.

I've just been outside and tried mine again with the lights on , and touching the wiper stalk for less than a nanosecond sprays the lights (and the bonnet, and the roof.)

My point exactly.:(

Just don't clean the windscreen when stationary......or turn the lights off.....

I've learnt to momentarily turn the lights to sidelight, then give the screen a quick squirt.

Only when safe of course.Traffic lights or when stationary.

The question is - is it really worth it? I mean the xenons have a certain life span measured in working hours and on-off cycles. Wouldn't this method wear them out quicker?

Servicepoint,

I suggest you find someone with a VAGCOM unit and get your rate of wash altered from 1:5 to 1:10 or 20.

And one of the reasons it was made to be part of the screen wash cycle, I suspect, is that an awful lot of people never bothered to use the washers and therefore caused a problem.

Ez Lo,

oh yes it is worth it. The spray is a high pressure one that certainly removes the muck, very quickly. The problems with wipers was that they ascratched the lenses.

Sure it is - I'm in the "wash'em xenons" team!

My question was if this turning-the-lights-off-and-on thingy is worth doing ...

And I also suspected the scratches as the main reason there are no light wipers any more.

Twas me talking about wipers compared to jets only.

I suspected the jets were high pressure and were developed for some reason.

I guess lens scratching was one of the reasons. Defraction of light and all that being a major contributing factor in their use now

Ah, but that's the point! It doesn't say that it will work like that, it just leaves it open to interpretation. I tried with mine last night and a momentary flick of the stalk washed the headlights as well as the windscreen. I'm not planning on taking SUK to Trading Standards for mis-description.

1:10 might be better, I know its supposed to be 1:5 but I get the impression everytime I just want a quick spray I get the full works .

Its not to save on screenwash as I've not topped up since I got the car in December more annoying really if the cars clean and I then get a wash on the go from the front jets . The windscreen has a good coating of Rain-x which also helps.

Surely, as has been mentioned before, if you have the need to use your screen washers the likelihood is that the screen is covered with dirty stuff so how are your headlights not also covered and being on the warm side the poop is likely to dry very quickly on the afor mentioned and as the light squirt only occurs every fifth operation I really can't see what the problem is! As for dirtying a clean car surely screen dirty = car dirty? Oh well, I'm okay with it but it's obviously a niggle for some :wonder:

I'm a bit anal about windscreen cleanliness and wipe the bits the wipers can't reach.

I have no problem with the system spraying the headlights every fifth time,it's the fact that they spray on the first that gets me, when I'm just being perfectionist about my windscreen!!;)

You can get pills for that! :D

I bloody hope so!
