EBC Front Discs over OEM (Octy vRS) - Better braking?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Got to change my 312x25 oem Octavia vRS front discs soon and I've been doing a little homework to see if I can get some better fast road breaking for a little more cash than standard. I've looked at both some Black Diamond and EBC groved discs and they're looking a little too expensive, especially when considering uprated pads too (Ferodo ds2500 or Pagid Fast road). I've come accross some EBC oem-replacement discs for

JUST MY OPINION :)

Speak to Bill Brockbank at Badger 5. He's the guy to speak to when it comes to brakes.

I just got some DS2500 pads for my Brembos off him at a good price.

I have EBC grooved discs and they are very good.. good enough for me anyway. The group N kit we used to be able to get also used EBC discs, IIRC, but were also cross drilled...very good kit.

EBC pads are crap apparently.

I've found EBC to be really hit and miss. On my previous car I fitted EBC grooved and dimpled discs with EBC Green Stuff pads, they were a big improvement over standard and I didn't have any problems with them, so I stuck to Green Stuff pads when they needed replacing.

When I eventually wore the discs out I fitted the same again with new pads, but very quickly the pad material started to adhere to the disc surface (looks like black smears) despite me not really pushing them very hard, causing it to feel like the discs were warped. It was near impossible to remove the material from the disc despite EBC's advice and in the end I just replaced them with standard discs and Ferrodo pads.

EBC Greenstuff pads werent too bad when i ran them on my R19 but the blackstuff were IMO too hard for road use, on a big brake conversion the car had the pads would rumble away unless really warmed up.

i'd steer clear of black diamond drilled only disks, i've known quite a few applications of them warp.

TBH if your after a fast road only option standard disks with DS2500 or the Pagid fast road pads should be more than enough.

I've heard ebc discs are okay, it's the pads you need to steer clear of.

Discs alone will not really change performance of braking, but discs + the pads you mention (dS2500 + Pagid FR) will, a fluid change is almost mandatory. I boiled OEM fluid on an A road in wales (well it's 5 tight turns from 60 with sure grip).

I run the Black Diamond grooved and drilled discs from Demon Tweaks with DS2500's Front and rear.

The only negative, other than cost...be aware of whats behind you when you stand on the brakes.

So what fluid do folks recommend? I was gonna go with Castrol super DOT 4 on my fluid change next week.

  • Administrators

IIRC thats got a similar boil point to 5. spec...where's Denis ;)

But is compatable with present fluid so a FULL flush is not essential, but it's IMHO better out than in.

The next tier I think silkolene (sp) 5+ stuff is not compatable with present fluids, so I guess some magic is required to get all the old stuff out...sounded like a lot of bother so I've had two changes of Castrol Super dot 4 and it holds up for 20+ mins on track quite happily.

Is

In have Pagid FR front pads which are good and have lasted a while now... These are running with the standard disks.. Good enough for road use..

The only downside that seems to affect all plain disk based VAG cars is the

Motorway in the wet syndrome, because the disks are cold a film of water, salt and oil form on the surface, meaning a 1 second pause during braking before braking is back to normal...

Hence I will be looking at the ATE 'powerdiscs' + new set of Pagid FR pads..

ATE Powerdiscs have 2 grooves in them that enables the pad to disperse water and gas if hot...

Available from Euro Car Parts.... The disks that is...

cheers

My recent personal experience (not from a mate of someone I knew down the pub or whatever...):

Car: Octy vRS

Brake upgrade: EBC groved / part drilled discs, Green stuff pads, standard Skoda brake fluid.

Situation: A day at Bruntingthorpe 2004.

Result: long pedal travel, fried pads and bad judder (but car still was stopping but not with the full confidence of the driver).

Solution: Ditch the Green Stuff pads and brake fluid. Change to Ferrodo 2500 pads and Castrol 4.0 super dot fluid (2 x 500 ml from Halfords).

Result: judder still bad but over the months gets better, take to next serious track day (Anglsey Nov 04). At last some more serious braking (you just will not achieve the same effect on the public highways unless you are a total looney tune and a danger to other road users) removes last remaining deposits on EBC discs. Judder eliminated, no brake fade or increase in pedal travel with new fluid; supreme confidence in brakes at the approach to school and hairpin corners).

Conclusion: EBC discs and Ferrodo pads + up graded brake fluid = :D

IT'S THE PADS NOT THE DISCS YOU NEED TO CHOOSE WISELY

Well, as I'm trying to keep the cost down (see SWMBO  ) and get slightly better breaking, I think I'll end up with some ATE (powerdiscs ?) from www.eurocarparts.co.uk(unsure of pricing because it's not clear if they're paired) and some Pagid Fast Road pads from www.motorsportworld.co.uk.

Anyone looking for the ATE price @ EuroCarParts should look for the Audi TT AUQ and assume these discs will fir the Octavia vRS (I'll confirm this before I order).

If the ATE discs are 'Power Discs', they'll have 2 continous grooves and are NOT drilled, the grooves should help dissapate water in the wet, which is what I want :D.

I'll top this off with some Castrol Super Dot 4, which I hear is good enough, as I don't do tracks.

Thanks again guys.

Just thought I'd add in. . .

I have fitted black diamond discs (grooved & drilled), with black diamond pads (predator). Although I have not been on track to test them, I would say that this combination is a vast improvement on standard.

In addition the car has just been serviced, so I had them put in some DOT 5 fluid and the brakes are even further improved. Infact, I am as impressed with the braking as I was with the additional accelleration after the re-map.

In my opinion don't skimp on the brakes, do the best you can afford. You may just be glad you did one day... (I know I've had a couple of heart shudders)

Lee,

I had some brake judder/vibration and though my discs where warped....however I did what Stuart J suggested and did a couple really hard stops....no judder/vibration anymore. Think it was something brake dust deposit build up.

I've had the DS2500 on now for over a year and that 20k miles....after 40k service...service manager said I had another 10k left on them....would say that's pretty good wear rate.
