Mk1 vRS Speedo stopped working

Featured Replies

I was driving down the motorway and when I looked at my speedo it was showing 0 mph. It had been working 30 seconds earlier as I remeber being stuck at 50mph behind a hgv. Also I noticed on the 5 mile drive home that the miles had stopped and I wasn't putting any miles on the clock. The rev counter is working and the fuel gauge is still showing the same as is the engine temp.

Could this be just a fuse or am I looking at a loose wire somewhere?

I have tried having a search but can only seem to find posts about people replacing their clocks as apposed to my problem.

Help much appreciated because I can't stand the speedo not working and I am hoping the fuel gauge is still acurate otherwise it could make for some interesting driving!

I have read somewhere on the forum about this being a common fault and a while back people where going to try and pester Skoda for a recall dont think that came off. I found this thread though on a quick search. Good Luck. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/27258-dashboard-needles-drop-to-zero/page__st__20__p__2393588__hl__dash+fault+speed__fromsearch__1#entry2393588

This is not a common problem, as only the speedometer and oddometer are not working.

The most likely cause would be a faulty road-speed sensor, its connector or the wiring to the dash insert.

I have just driven to work and the fuel gauge isn't working properly. Depending on if I am driving uphill or downhill it shows between 2/3 of a tank to a full tank. Although the rev counter and engine temp are working.

Get you!! :D

I can't see how the dash insert would be affected by driving uphill/downhill.

This may seem like an odd question, but is your reversing light working?

There are known problems with the circuit boards inside the instrument cluster on the early (2000 and earlier) TDIs and the smaller engined petrols but not the VRS. As suggested it's probably something in the wiring going into the back of it. The chances of the road speed sensor and the fuel sender going at the same time are slim so the problems more likely at the dialset end of the wiring.

How easy is it to remove the instrument cluster to check the wiring?

What would it be causing it not to register any further mileage?

If the speed sensor wire isn't working that's why it's not racking up any mileage either.

Speed = distance/time

'Mileage' = distance

The speed sensor actually produces a pulse/pulses for every rotation of the final drive. When multiplied by the circumference of the tyre, this gives you a distance for each pulse.

I will check the wiring for the speed sensor whereabouts is it's location?

Before you do that - are your reversing lights working?

Both the reversing light switch and road speed sensor are both on the gearbox and share a common power feed.

Yes they are I got the mrs to check all the lights for me earlier today after it happened and they were all working

When the fuel gauge was going between 2/3 and full, how much do you reckon you have in the tank?

Did the fuel gauge go at the same time as the speedo?

  • Author

Before it happened the fuel gauge was showing about 7/8 and then after the speedo went I paid close attention to the fuel gauge and all the others to try and see what was working and what wasn't

I would be looking at a bad earth in the harness behind the dash.

  • Author

I am guessing to check the earth I would have to take the clocks out and check all the wiring behind?

  • Author

Would you guys start by checking wires and sensors?

Think I may have a look at the vag com map and see who is near me and scan it for fault codes
