APR Dealers in Decline

Featured Replies

Hi all

Following on from my saga: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/123647-vag-com-16985-check-sum-error/

I've noticed that Awesome-GTI and Performance Driven have both dropped APR in favor of Revo...

Also, the MIL being on is now part of the MOT test! So I've been toying with the idea of just getting the standard map put on... fed up with issues and hassle due to the APR remap. I should not have to have it "fixed" every year.

How could I go about going from the APR remap -> Original remap, and what sort of cost am I looking at?

I know another option is to get another remap from Revo or similar, but I begrudge paying out again and the wife isn't keen.

Thanks

If you need to change your map you dont really have much choice. Any alternative mapping company are going to charge you again.

If they cant solve the mapping issues your only real option is the get the standard map put back on the car for free from the original mapper.

Or pay someone to remap the car.

I would recommend Shark Performance

By the way Awsome told me they were dropping APR for tuniing and products because of their poor customer backup.

I bought one the of last of their HPFP. When the stock ran out they werent going to use them again even though they said the HPFP was the best on the market :wonder:

FYI there was some kind of spat between REVO and APR, which resulted in APR pulling out of the UK market.

iirc it was something to do with claims one of the two where nicking the others remap codes

If you want/need APR stuff in general, these guys are a good source:

Harding Performance

Most mappers would put standard back on for little or no charge if it was their map so where did you have it done and what did they say about flashing back to standard?

Have you checked whether a Skoda dealership can put a standard map back on the ECU for you?

If you've kept receipts of how much this has cost over the 4 years in terms of petrol running to and fro, labour rates to have the ECU flashed again and again to fix the problem I would be taking APR or their UK dealer to small claims court.

Could a Skoda dealership reset the ECU back to standard software?

I'd imagine Shark will have a standard map that they can pop on for you anyway. Give them a ring and ask the question.

Could be worth getting the Revo trial as IIRC they load up the standard map for it to revert back to when the trial runs out. It worked for me a few years ago when I had the 17705 code after getting a Custom Code map on my mkiv Anniversary. The tuner was adamant that the map wasn't at fault, & that I had a boost leak somewhere, but after 2 weeks of head scratching, & replacing every boost/vacuum pipe I was still getting 17705 & limp on cold start up. In desperation I got the Revo trial loaded on which cured it, & reverted back to standard after 5 hours. Shortly after I got Revo stage 1, which never through the 17705 again. Found out later that this wasn't uncommon with Custom Code maps on some cars, & was down to an incorrect value in the software. :wonder:

Thanks for the replies.

Pauldazzle... that's not a bad idea! A bit cheeky, but a good idea nonetheless! ::Edit, just checked and there's a Revo dealer about 10 miles from me.

Bodge, I'll give them a call- I have a feeling I'll be met blank faced though.

I've emailed PD to see what they can do to help resolve the issue and indicated I want the standard map put back on.

I'll let you know if I have any luck..

Well after I had the APR trial it locked out my ECU. So when I went to Shark to buy a remap Ben had to remove the ECU and reflash it back to standard. Once he'd put it back to standard, he then uploaded the Shark map via the OBD port.

So in theory Shark can do the same job for you, but miss off the last step if you just want a standard map...

A word of warning regarding the Revo/APR trial map. When it reverts back to standard, it doesn't at all. It reverts back to APR's interpretation of a standard map, so you effectively run an APR map witht eh boost and timing etec reduced to produce near enough standard levels of power, but it is by no means standard. That is how you can 'unlock' the map when you pay APR for it, without having to get it flashed again.

I had the same problem as Bodge, and Shark flashed the standard map back for me after I had the APR trial installed, but I was buying one of his maps anyway.

AFAIK, skoda dealers can't flash ECU's anyway. They don't have the tools to do it iirc.

I don't think the same applies to the Revo trial though?

I thought it did. AFAIK, APR used the trial system that Revo developed in the states, or the other way round, I can't remember which. Either way, the trial system is that same with slightly different maps.

I've had the Revo trial on 3 different VAG 1.8T's, & then had the full Revo a while later, & each time the ECU has had to be flashed again, which has taken about 45 mins to do. If the Revo trial reverts to a Revo version of a standard map when it's counted down it's certainly been indistinguishable from the OEM map to me. Ethos may still may still be able to solve the problem this way even if I'm incorrect.

it does indeed, its been discussed here before, the Revo trial, just the same as APR reverts back to their interpretation of the map. Several members have had issues getting cars that had the Revo trial on remapped elsewhere due to the ECU being locked to prevent the Revo code being read.

The memory on the ECU is very small and it does not have enough storage capacity to hold both the standard skoda code and revo, so when the trial ends it keeps the revo program code and the map parameters are altered to feel more like standard, but some have found their interpretation to be underpowered compared to the skoda map. Perhaps the reason for this is to encourage you to buy the full map by making the car feel slow.

That's a bit of a sneaky way of going about it!

I don't like the idea of a map staying on your ECU even after they've supposedly flashed it back to "standard" though. What if you had a trial map and then a few months later wrote off the car... the insurance get a bit suspicious and decide to check the ECU and then invalidate your insurance after they find a map on there that you thought had been taken off!

Do the current popular tuners on here (Shark, R-Tech) definately put a standard map back on after you ask for a remap to be taken off? It sounds like if they definately do that's the best option for the OP - but I would still be looking for financial recompense from APR.

I would like to confirm that when using our STS to upload the standard map, or returning to us to have a car put back to standard before selling it etc, we return it to 100% stock. This is one of the advantages of the STS over other offerings.

I've contacted my local VAG specialist garage (who use Custom Code maps), who think they might be able to flash it back to standard- they were going to see if APR lock their maps first though and if so, if that's something they could work around.

Shark, why are you guys so far away from me?!!

Sorry!

Say Hi! (We're probably related...)

:giggle:

APR's trial map is definitely not stock! Had mine rolling roaded not long after having the trial map, 180bhp dead on, but 200lbs/ft of torque rather than 170-ish :D

And they are usually about 190bhp stock so you was robbed

Your choice of course but I personnaly would never have another custom Code Map. Do some research on Custom Code/JBS before you make your final decision.

Wouldnt want to hear you jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.
