New BMW M5 -vrs- Nissan GT-R

No Suprise to me.

Wonder how a Audi R8 V10 would compare, much closer but better than the GTR (?) and it is half as much again cost wise.

GTR is a wonder car. 4 wheel drive rules! Just a shame Audi manage to make most of their 4 wheel drive cars so dull that the M series BMWs often get the nod, but only in good weather.

Weather/temperature in the above test looked lowish, M series are much better in the summer/warmer months. In the depths of winter leave the 2 wheel drive BMWs at home.

The BMW is a super comfy 4 door super saloon which will carry 5 people + luggage in comfort, the fact it was as close as it was shows how good the BMW is! Or have I missed the point?

super car v luxury autobahn stormer strange comparison? The GTR is awesome because its sole purpose is performance but the M5 is immensely quick but also a good long distant cruiser for 5 adults.

I am just surprised at how heavy the M5 is its 2 Tons

I love the GTR  the car of my dreams

A bit slower, but they are so expensive!

You can pick a two year old GT-R up now for about 40-42k. Absolute performance bargain.

The BMW is still a great car, but I guess any 4 door turned into a performance machine will have compromises, the same way the GT-R has some. It's not really a 4 seater coupe as they say. Back seats are tiny.

Me too, the GT-R is a heavy old boat, but the M5 is the same as my 9 seat Land Rover Defender was!

As a GT-R fan I always like to see reports and it in action, even if the tests are not always evenly balanced. I just like to watch it go. :D

I've got a tunnel run, Santa Pod day and RAF max speed/30-130 lined up in March for mine. Be the first time(s) I use it in anger and I'm getting frustrated with waiting. :(

WTF Why would you even compare these two cars, one was designed for the track from the go. and the other is a large saloon developed into a monster. Autocar are a bunch of ****s who like to hear there own voice.

Many M5 owners have claimed that the BMW is faster than the GT-R in real world conditions, so I guess that's why they did the test.

There's a guy near me who has the Ultima 720 version of the GT-R. It leaves my standard R35 for dead and unlike many uprated cars, it has no problem getting its power down.

Lots of fabia vRS owners will proclaim that their car is faster than "insert super fast car here" but no one tests them

Now that does not suprise me! :dull:

A little tweaking does make an amazing difference to the R35.

I'm running 610bhp, uprated brakes and a few little bits.

I didn't think it would make a huge amount of difference but... wow!

I took the 3yr servicing deal, so it's standard at the moment.

Am I right in thinking that both cars are similarly priced? If so then the test is fine. If I had around 70k to spend on the car I'd probably pick the fastest

If it was you only car? As much as I`m a petrol head and like a good dash of speed AND can appreciate how stunning a car the GTR is, if I could only have one car, Id pick a M5 every time, out of all cars. Its the do everything car. IMO of course, personal choice and that.

The benefits the M5 has over the Nissan is an extra seat, 2 doors and a bigger boot. Probably cheaper to run too. I think a GTR could easily be a daily driver especially if you could afford one outright anyway

The running costs are a shock for many people, so many are weekend toys.

A set of tyres alone is about £1500 minimum for the cheaper ones and if you do three or four track days you'll be wanting a new set.

Brakes are expensive too.

I'd think the running costs on the M5 are at least half if not less... :(

If you use it in anger and track it occasionally I'd not be surprised if you were looking at (averaged out over a few years) about £300 per month + insurance + depreciation + fuel.

Overall I doubt all the variables would make it less than £1k per month even if you didn't abuse it too much, had cheap insurance and got it second hand. New and the depreciation is about £1000 a month for the first year at least...

That's why if I had to sell one car, the GT-R would be the first to go.

Great vehicle, but it's always costing you serious money while sitting on the drive. Even if you don't use it much.

I want to drive your car... please come to a meet with me?!?!!?

If i could afford it i would buy the GTR as it is a fun car to run around in and will always give me a smile.

I see the servicing deal came back with the MY2011 (£499 for 3yr) so there will be plenty of second hand GT-Rs in 2/3 years.

Consumables and parts are so expensive.

e.g The list price for ATF fluid is about £80/l and it takes 8l (in theory 10l). Even with real prices, you can pay £500+ for the ATF change.

that gtr is immensley quick. i want one

I've driven a GTR on a track day.

It's by FAR the best car I have ever driven.........it's quicker than you could ever imagine it will be.

Usually on track days, I have time to check my speed, etc. whilst driving - not with the GTR, it's so fast you hardly have time to breathe before the next corner is upon you.

The gearbox is incredible, to take all that torque and still provide totally seamless shifts.

This would concern me if I was ever in a position to buy a used one. If anything, Datsun have done the car a dis-service by selling it so cheaply. As you say, the running costs are horrific and the temptation to scrimp on them by some owners must be high.

If you're the second owner you should be OK, as most new buyers take a servicing deal. A lot of them are leased and the lease companies sell just before the first paid service.

What tends to happen is that people going in with thier eyes open have a lot of money or (like me) don't use it very often when another car will do. I drive a Fabia Greenline II to work. :D

Those who buy it without a lot of research often sell it on after six months or so as they realise the running costs are far more than they thought.

It's not unusual to see a two or three year old one that's had one owner per year, as they see the costs coming and sell.

There are usually a fair number for sale, despite the fact that they didn't sell a lot of them in the first place.

Service histories are usually bang on, because people know if they don't do it the resale value will plummet.

Better to get that service done and sell before it needs brakes or tyres! :D

Absolutely agree emoticon-0148-yes.gif

What a pathetic comparison ! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif
