dual mass flywheel converted to solid mass fly wheel..update el

Featured Replies

Mine failed at 35K. Now got SMF.

Phoned up my Insurance Company and they weren,t interested in this conversion as no power gains are made from this.He said they would want to now about remaps/chips and turbo,s etc where extra power is gained. So DMF to SMF isn,t a problem at all emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Yes I also checked this with my insurance company - I have not gone the SMF conversion route, but put it to them as a. 'What if I had an SMF conversion?' question. Their response was - No need to inform them. They seemed to get the point of the conversion as being a reliability upgrade rather than a performance mod. I would still feel it was safest to at least inform them - just in case.

Hi all, my first contribution. I have octavia 1.9 tdi ambienthe, and the dmf has just gone at 138000 miles! My car is a taxi, hence the mileage. Clutch not slipping at all, but juddery as hell, and pedal on floor to get into gear. Checked cylinders and all ok. I too am having conversion done tomorrow, and will let you know how it goes. Incidentally, if any of you need advice about changing either clutch cylinders, I will be happy to share my experiences on this.

I have a Skoda Octavia MK2 (1.9 TDI PD Ambiente bought in 2008). The engine judders on start. This problem is not always present and the judder varies from a minor tremble to a major judder sometimes, could this be the clutch?

Do all new models have them? I have a VRS DSG. Does that have a DMF and is a conversion possible?

As Gtewary asks, are they standard fitment on all new Skodas, or just certain models / engines ?

Pretty much standard accross the board even DSG's

My mates 1995 RS2 even has one!!

had conversion done today cost £645 all in. much lighter on pedal, pedal also much higher on bite, drives superbly, no judder, no vibration, and appears much smoother. NG mobile auto repairs in Hoddesdon, Herts done it, collected car at 9am, back by 5pm. great service. According to Nick the mechanic, all mk2 octavias have dmf, and first signs of it failing is rattling as you depress pedal. He fitted the valio 4-piece kit, and though it's early days, all good.

I believe all 2004 and beyond have dmf fitted as standard.

This I'm afraid is a common con in India. As you see from the video the Indians still sing praises and use superlatives to describe the car. The base price for that car with the inferior wheels brakes engine etc is still about £22K. Thats a direct conversion. In terms of purchasing power or true cost it's probably double that. Lot of manufacturers will introduce premium cars then change to smaller wheels, drum brakes and remove things like airbags etc. Nobody in the western world would stand for it!

You are absolutely right. There are a lot of problems associated with this car especially with Gearbox,Clutch,DMF and air con. However the later versions seems to be better kitted up than those of previous years as the company seems to have learned it's lesson(but not to a great extent). Not withstanding this, the poor after sales service offered by a few companies that seems to have monopolized this line of business in order to inflate spare and service has let the brand down.

I mentioned my problem in the Intro section....not a good start so I will repeat it on here as it makes more sense.

During the cold spell a few weeks ago I started to notice an unusual feel to the clutch pedal through the first 25% of depression, it felt a bit like the brake pedal does when the ABS operates. The clutch works fine no slipping or juddering just the rough feel to the pedal operation, last night when I dropped my daughter off at work there was a loud rattle while the engine was ticking over in neutral, this cleared as soon as I pressed the clutch pedal and this morning it ran ok.We are due to go to the lakes in two weeks time and I am a bit unsure as to chance it in case the flywheel breaks up.I had issues with the local Skoda garage in the Boro so I wont go back there again, if it is the flywheel and I purchase the Valeo conversion kit can anyone recommend a good independant garage in the Teesside area.....thanks folks.

hi,lyonzo..the dual mass fly wheels were fitted to cars to dampen vibrations and are good until they break down, and very costly to replace clutch and dmf. bad design fault i think because they break down well before the clutch has to be replaced.skoda dealers themselves prefer the solid mass fly wheels now as replacements, just had mine done and to be honest theres no vibrations or anything..just the same as the dmf but the solid will never break down just have to replace the clutch when that goes wich is well cheaper, skoda in liverpool charge £900 to replace and fit smf and clutch.but i bought my own valeo 4 piece smf and clutch £312 and £150 to fit from an indy, the symptoms i was having was juddering when reversing and taking of and up to 30mph onwards viration and a droning sound,i suspected dmf failing and with the help of the guys on the forum was advised on the valeo smf with clutch.you can get cheaper ones of course but you get what you pay for i suppose and cheaper lighter ones might vibrate..i dont know but just my opinion..so i went with the valeo 4 piece and have no complaints...hope this reply was of help" peter-skodaman3.

Hi mate, what clutch centre did this for you? I want to convert my 57 Seat Leon Fr 2.0TDi 170 and need a reliable and affordable place to do it for me in Merseyside, my back isn't up to doing clutches any more! Also does anyone on here have experience of converting the 170bhp? Many thanks
