Running in - how much does it matter?

Featured Replies

I know various methods have beed discussed before? But how much difference does it really make.

I have tried to be a good boy with mine... I've done 420 miles so far, but I have to admit I have probably hit 3500rpm a couple of times, have been 110mph once (really didn't realise how quick I was going! )

I have tried not to be too heavy footed either, but I have been driving briskly!

So am I doing the right thing? Could there be any detrimental effects?

The dealer told me to drive it normally! ;)

Occasionally giving it some beans isn't going to cause any harm.

Driving flat out all the time wouldn't be good.

The way i understand it is the worst thing to do is to keep the revs fairly constant. You need to vary your inputs, don't strain the engine but also don't keep at 4000rpm for too long

My dealer said drive it how you want. These modern engines are ready to go from the start so he said. I've done around 300 miles and have been driving similarly to what you described, vRSed.

jamjar is right constant revs is the worst thing, you need variable engine speed whenever possible but I have found it difficult to keep the revs down myself,

When I got my last 2 16v petrol cars I was told keep it below 5k revs yet the vRS is rev limited to 4700ish so we can

Sounds like I'm doing ok. Keep taking it for B road blasts, loads of lovely twisties in the Fens. I certainly have been changing the revs. I think I just need to ease of the juice a bit though... Although I haven't been caning it!

Keeping constant revs is boring. Although I do lots of miles, hardly any of them are motorway!

I feel somewhat relieved and reassured anyway!

It is only now starting to pull harder higher up the rev range. Over about 3k it didn't really feel all that fast - i.e. it still goes quick but the hammer up feel goes. Now it does that to about 3.5k. Done around 1500 miles now.

I did make sure to have a varied speed, and I've not nailed it all that much for say 500 miles, but increasing the 'max revs' up over time.

Although the engine is pretty much 'run in' it still needs to settle in the car. The gearbox has got noticably better, the revving is starting to free up a bit too. Also mpg has been going up slowly but surely, even though I do rev it up a little more every once in a while

Personally i would wait for the oil to warm up before she gets a battering ;)

Yes always warm your car up before getting heavy with the pedal, certainly in turbo cars but all cars should really be warmed up. The good thing with the fabia is you don't need to be heavy with the revs to get it to go. Ideally you should change at about 3500
