WHICH FUEL ? DILEMMA

Featured Replies

Looking for a bit of advice / opinion on the following :-

Im on my 2nd Octavia VRS petrol, both cars owned from new and treated with respect apart from the odd occasion when an Audi / BMW's bonfire needed dampening down shall we say lol

Current one is a face lift 2010 with a remap and the newer engine, the last one was a standard 2006.

I ran my old one on standard supermarket unleaded with no issues at all ever. My new one has been ran on super unleaded from day 1 (not the crazy expensive optimax stuff just the supermarket stuff). I have no idea if it makes any difference to performance / m.p.g. whatsoever as my new car was remapped at 3 days old so impossible for me to compare the two.

Anyway here is the dilemma - I can now get a 5% discount on fuel from a certain supermarket petrol station near me (long story but it's totally legit) the problem is the place i can get the discount from doesn't sell super unleaded only the normal stuff.

Should i start to buy the cheaper standard unleaded fuel and enjoy the extra 5% discount or should i continue to buy the super unleaded stuff. Would work out around 7 - 8p per litre cheaper.

Help

You might find that with your remap you need to use 98 ron. Mine is Revo performance mode 2 and i do.

What happens if you use normal stuff then ?

Don't know, probably won't run as well. I don't see the point just to save a few quid. Only ever use v power in mine.

Worst case scenario! Your engine will 'detonate' pre combustion and will be scrap.

In which case it won't run as well, so I was right

Nothing too serious then lol, think what I was really wanting to know was wether you all though super actually made any difference.

Yes, cars i have had in the past always felt more responsive and eager with v power. Not used anything else for years though.

Tesco not good, never been a fan but never tried the 99 ron only 97 though.

BP ultimate but i don't think that's that great to be honest.

any idea what Momentum like?

Never tried it mate. Maybe others have.

any idea what Momentum like?

It keeps going and going and going..... ;)

In all seriousness though, I accidentally put some in on my 1.8TSi and it didn't like it, yet my old man put some in his 2.0 Passat & it was fine. :wonder:

I tried BP Ultimate the other day and it made a bit of difference, smoother. Now whether it will make a difference on a vRS I don't know yet.

Iv put the texaco more expensive version in my petrol vrs a few times and it tends to juder on idle, but doesnt on the cheaper texaco fuel, it runs really well on optimax from esso tho

I use Momentum all the time in my Tsi as I can tell the difference when I put normal unleaded in. It idles smoother using the Momentum and it does feel more responsive when accelerating, I thought it was just me so tried alternating tanks and I could deffo tell the difference.

Ran my previous B7 RS4 for 20k miles on V-power and then 20k miles on Tesco99 (momentum) no difference in performance or economy with the marginally cheaper Tesco 99 fuel. Would expect the lower revving TFSI engine of the VRS petrol to be equally happy.

the problem I have is no local shell or tesco only esso and that only has 97 ron fuel

97 is better than nothing i suppose.

I've been using momentum for over a year now car loves it stupidly put normal 95 in a few weeks ago was in a rush needed fuel so stopped at shell and lifted the wrong pump, anyway it was ok but didnt feel as eager to go not as sharp i didnt realise i had done it until about 20 miles when it feel sluggish when overtaking.

or you could use this

£12.99 per bottle from halfords or do what i did speak to your local motor factors and get it for £2.50 per bottle!! :giggle:

Ive always used momentum and never had any issue. I prefer it over V power as my engine runs smoother with the momentum.
