Trust the Eu to be a pain-in-the-arse.

They do write to you before it's due explaining what could happen if you fail to act.

Yes they do, but in many cases the letters are not received because the drivers have failed to update an address change (that's another £2000 penalty, by the way).

Those people who still have paper only licences are going to need to get them updated to photocard licences withing the next couple of years (still haven't seen the exact date but it is coming).

Having international licences in the same format makes life much easier for those of us who have to check them for ID purposes. For Speed / Driver Alertness courses no photo id is generally going to mean no course, it tells you in the letter but people don't read the instructions, do they?

In truth the '4b' date on the licence is not too important, it's the '11' dates on the back which really matter as they show when your entitlement to drive ends. It gets nasty if you are over 70 or have some sort of medical restriction leading to more frequent licence renewals, in those cases the date the photocard expires is the date your entitlement to drive expires.

So why do I need to get a Photocard licence if I have a papaer one. I dont see the need for it.

As for the driver courses so what happens then now if you dont have photo ID.

In the near future the only valid licences will be the photocards, they are even going to do away with the paper counterparts.

No photo ID - no course (as it says in the confirmation letter and when you book online). It can be something other than a photocard licence, though. The reason is to avoid personation. If you ask nicely you may be offered an alternative date but you'll probably have to pay again.

Well Id like to know where you heard that my paper Licence is valid until im 70 and states so on the Licence and as far as I know they cant change that.

There has been talk of late of getting rid of the paper counterpart of the photcard Licence but that may not happen yet.

The only way they could get rid of the paper Licence is if they dont charge for the replacement photocard ones and as Im sure there are Millions of people who still have the paper style I doubt it will happen.

I dont see why I should have something I dont need.

As for the coures how do you do it then if you have no photo ID?

I as one amognst many dont have any photo ID as I have never needed it.

If you change address or any details to do with your licence you MUST have a photocard licence.

Eventually they'll get everyone.

How can anyone have "never needed photo id"? :giggle:

I went to a gig at a club in Glasgow a couple of years ago, on the ticket it stated everyone is ID'd so bring driving licence, proof of age etc. I turned up and handed the girl on the door my original and current paper licence, she then told me it needed to be a 'proper' CAR licence with 'like your face on it'. Luckily one of the doormen was over 35 and recognized my vintage analogue licence and I was let in.

Things like this make me want to hold onto my paper licence for as long as (legally) possible.

Declare it lost, get a nice new photo card DL then you have have the old one as a keepsake. OK technically you cant have two DL`s and your suppose to shred the old one, but if your only keeping it in your bedside table?

You still have to pay for it the same as everyone else. Dont they now charge more for a lost licence?

Yeah, was just thinking if he wanted to keep it. You could "move" to another address for free, then move back again a few weeks later, if you do it online you just bin the old one. Although I'm not sure your old old DL will have the numbers on it to do that online. :-/

You can only do it free now if you have photocard. Otherwise change of address means photocard fee ;)
