why is my car making this noise

Featured Replies

in neutral, when i release the clutch, i hear a tapping noise, but when i press the cluth it disappears.

i've never noticed this before. something to worry about? timing chain needs replacing?

edit: pershap tapping not the best word to describe, but it's like sounds like its driving a chain or something

Is it just one Clunk noise?

no clunk noise, sounds a bit like bicycle chain, it's not very loud, i can only hear it when i have my stereo off.

Oh right i was going to suggest it just being your clutch engaging as all cars do it, if you put the clutch down and then let it off it makes a slightly loud clunk

More than likely the release bearing or first motion shaft in the gearbox.

More than likely the release bearing or first motion shaft in the gearbox.

is it something to worry about?

Plus one on what Tech1e has said. Unlikely you need to worry, but does depend on how loud it is. Is the car still under warranty? Normally the thrust (release) bearing can rumble from near new on some cars and is normal, or rumble and rattle a bit as it gets worn, usually worse when the engine is hot. If it's the input shaft bearings that's a bit more of a big job. If it's input shaft it is sometimes accompanied by a bit of a gear wine too whilst driving. Thrust bearing is more likely I would guess. If under warranty get it looked at or if not under warranty and it doesn't seem very loud don't do anything until it starts making much more of a din. It not a big deal really but will need the box to be dropped to fix. Doesn't take long if it's the thrust bearing.

It's like a quiet ticking sound, like when u peddle a bicyle slowly, like a diesel but a lot quieter.

I read somewhere that it's easier on the starter motor if you press the clutch while starting, I hope this hasn't caused this or best if i start as normal without pressing the clutch down?

unfortunately my car's out of warranty (2008 reg)

No...pressing the clutch down won't have caused a problem. It does indeed take the load of the starter motor and is recommended.

More than likely the release bearing or first motion shaft in the gearbox.

I would agree, gearbox noise, by definition of the clutch up clutch down description

when this happens in a citroen , you need a "bearing kit" to repair the gearbox... happens like clockwork every 40k.......

Is this something that has just appeared or are you experiencing the delightful 'burble' of these little 3 cyl engines for the first time? They can sound like anything from a diesel to a ferrari which is something to enjoy and not to worry about. I suppose they could be mistaken for a bicycle too on occasions :giggle: I've adjusted to just letting the thing 'say' what it likes while enjoying the best small car of this sized engine I've ever owned. Hope it's nothing more serious.

Could be a finger popped out of the clutch diaphragm.

I had another listen today after a longer journey around 40 miles, i couldn't hear any difference while pressing the cluth down or not.

Could it be this noise is only present when not warmed up.
