Clutch And Flywheel Replacement For 4X4 Turbo

Featured Replies

Ok well for now I dont have the time or money to do what I want to the car atm but the clutch slip is a lot worse and after trailering the race car last Friday has really highlighted just how bad its got :(

Was going to just throw the G60 SMF on with VR6 centre plate and cover but concerned it will not be a able to cope with 200ish bhp current level and 4wd - possibly ok on the vrs fwd???

What are the options? And of course costs

Thanks

DG

Doesn't the 4x4 use the 6 speed gearbox same as the S3's and TT's,

If so they use a complete differant flywheel and clutch setup and the g60/vr6 conversion won't fit

the g60 conversion will be fine - it is rated to 250bhp

Replacing it with another standard clutch (what its already got on there) should be fine, the clutches don't really wear any quicker on remapped petrols (unless you mistreat them), just on remapped diesels. The only time it's worth uprating the clutch is if you go big turbo at which point it'll be putting out double the standard torque.

Not sure if you can do the SMF conversion, Snowmuncher or one of the other 4x4 owners should be able to tell you if its the same box as the VRS

No. Its a 5 speed.

Ok thanks guys,

I did do a bit of searching prior to posting and someone did fit the G60/VR6 setup to his 4x4 and fitted fine.

I was more concerned about coping with the power due to extra traction of the 4x4 but I guess the clutch in place is worn anyway which def did not help putting software on it :D

The G60/VR6 setup does fit the OEM O2J gearbox in a 4x4

iirc its modra_vrs who has this setup on

Snow muncher do you recal if he was running stock power? Upto stg2 software?

Cheers

iirc APR stage 2

Hopefully he might be along to confirm ;)

Stock clutch should be able to cope with up to 300ft/lbs of torque, stage 1 remaps are usually 250ft/lbs torque at the most, not sure what the torque is on stage 2 but the only VRS's I've seen doing much more than 300ft/lbs torque have been big turbo ones like Des's or Stevie's.

Hi , sorry, bit late on the uptake on this one. As it happens, just had my clutch replaced as the old one started to slip. It had been in for approx 50k / 5 years.

Used a Valeo 228mm 1997 Vr6 jobbie from Eurocarparts - £85 inc Vat + fitting. Apparently the same as the more common LUK which they normally supply.

Have had no problems with it, in fact it's alot lighter, but that might just be down to the age of the old one.

Been easy on it as not done many miles yet. Mine also has the lightened flywheel that's in the Awesome conversion kit.

As for mods, see my sig. Mine running about as much as you can from the stock K03s turbo.

@Snow Muncher, you probably know this given your car's advanced mods.

Would be interested to know what engine speed other 4x4 drivers are pulling?

Doing 3500 at indicated 80mph which makes me suspect my FEX 'box has vRS internals fitted or possibly it's from an A3 Quattro which may have different ratios ???

Edited by modra_vrs

Bearing in mind I've not got a standard engine, turbo, or gearbox ...

In 5th ( more or less the same ratio as an O2J 5th ), 80mph sees the rev counter sat dead on the 3250rpm mark.

In 6th (diesel final drive gear) 80mph sees the rev counter dead on the 2750rpm mark

The vRS (stock 179bhp) I've got kicking around at the mo sits closer to the 3750rpm marks at 80mph

There are several threads where ratio's have been listed, not sure if the 4x4's O2J got mentioned

brother ran a G60/VR6 setup on his 4x4, it was fine when it was running a GT2x hybrid as well as just mapped. in fact the gearbox gave up before the clutch did
