Strange engine problem for 1.9TDi (2002)

Featured Replies

I have a Skoda Superb 1.9TDi 2002 model.

Of late when I start the engine, it seems to be down to 2 cylinders and the vehicle on board check states that there is an electrical fault in injector number 2.

However if I drive it for 5 minutes, rev it slightly for about a minute, turn it off and immediately turn it back on again, I can drive the length and breath of the country revving beautifully on all 4 cylinders.

Has anyone come across this before and what can be done about it. The Skoda garage want to replace the injector but that will cost about €800

Check the glow plugs :-)

Hi John,

Sounds very like glow plugs to me too. Well worth replacing them all (about E13 each)...

Solved it for me.

Best of luck,

Rob

Those PD injectors are not cheap so better make sure all the cheaper options are eliminated - worth checking the glow plugs but if it fires and you have good compression then after a few seconds of cold idling the glow plugs are redundant anyway.

I assume the engine has been serviced regularly with the correct oil and you don't have worn out cams, which drives valves and injectors on these engines. Wrong oil will cause cams to wear out.

The other relatively cheap thing to change is the injector wiring loom. Known VERY common issue that can cause havoc with the injectors - can be temperature dependant (wire expension etc.)

A close neighbor who is a qualified mechanic also suspected the injector wiring loom. Would I be able to get a 2nd hand wiring loom in a scrapyard.

Are there any cheatsheets for how to extract one of these from a scrapped car. Also are there restrictions as to which car I could take it from.

Does it have to be a 2002 TDi Superb or would any VAG 1.9 TDi injector loom do?

NO, buy a new one, they break due to oil contamination.
