mpg vs 'a good thrash'

Featured Replies

was getting 58 mpg with my mk1 octavia 1.9. ive just bought a L+K 2.0, and realised now that the mpg isnt going to be as good :-/ few journeys watching the trip computer has shown average 50mpg on a good run. when i bought it, the average was showing 35!!

its making me a bit wary of putting my foot down, and i seem to be always looking at the computer seeing if i can raise the mpg all the time, which means driving like a grandad :-)

so....... question is, i realise thats gonna probably be a bit detrimental to engine, and may gum the turbo vanes up, so how often do i need to just thrash it to within an inch of its life to clear it all out? :-)

once a week? on each journey for a few mins? once a month?

thanks

I gave my old mk1 Octy 1.9 a light spanking once or twice a tank, still used to average 50-55, no problems in nearly 6 years other than having to clean my EGR once.

Going to use the same technique with my VRS unless someone says otherwise...

Is the new one a common rail 2.0?

If so then they drive differently to the PD's and I have read a lot that they do better if revved a bit more unlike the PD's that are more than happy to chug along at not much above idle.

its certainly a 2.0, but im told its PD. 57 plate mk 2 L+K 130-odd bhp i think. hope that means something to you :-) its just i hear of so many cases of gummed up vanes through not giving the turbo a bit of oomph, that im not sure of the best way to drive it. i want it to be as cheap as poss, but at same time take care of the engine.

thanks

I think with all cars they need a good thrashing sometimes. Driving them steady all the time can sometimes actually do more damage than good!

Also have you checked to see if yours is included in the recall issued for the 2.0 PD engines? It includes the injectors and wiring loom (although think at some point it wont include the wiring loom).

Injector recall is only the pd170 engines in the VRS so no need to worry about an l&k which will be the pd140 (140 bhp by the way)

My 2.0 TDI has seen a pretty consistent 45mpg since the first few thousand mile passed - that's mainly commuting and 50+ on longer runs. That's calculated brim to brim and not by looking at the trip computer. Best for a tank of fuel from full to empty was 55MPG.

It made no difference when I had it remapped to 170+ BHP, it just goes faster :)

what would you call a good thrashing? going up one hill in low gear high revs? or a few miles worth of thrashing? or longer even?

Got mine back from the garage and after a normal run home it showed 19mpg. It was showing 39-40mpg going to the garage in morning traffic. I did ask them to check out the turbo. I expect the roadtest had a good thrash.

I have a PD vrs and I give it ' a dam good thrashing ' once every couple of weeks by redlining it in every gear from a standstill, which normally means I only manage to get it into forth gear, this is because I've either run out of road or l still want to retain my driving licence.......

As above really. Just give it a good run and let it rev out in every gear (speed limits allowing!)

I wouldn't recommend red-lining though... that is there for a reason and has little advantage in a standard TDI to rev it up to there as the power/torque has died off long ago.

I'd say a good foot to the floor drive through the gears going to about 3500rpm should do the trick.

You'll probably find a lot of soot coming out the back but nothing wrong with that!
