New windscreen - new rain sensor?

Featured Replies

I just had a new windscreen fitted. Yesterday in the rain the rain sensitive wipers didn't seem to perform as well as expected. They used to always wipe a bit too much, but now the screen was filling up with water and then eventually they'd wipe, even on highest setting.

Reading from ELSAWIN it seems that VAG procedure is that the actual rain sensor must be replaced any time it is unstuck from the windscreen. Is this true? I've never heard of the sensor being replaced in this way.

If I understand right from the diagram I'm looking at, it seems like the rain sensor itself is stuck to the glass within the mirror retaining plate on the screen, and then the mirror assembly clips onto this retaining plate.

Has the correct windscreen been fitted? ie for a car with rainsensor?

Yes, it has the larger rear view mirror mounting plate required for the rain sensor.

No need to replace the sensor, just carefully clean it from old glue and put a new gel pad. If Skoda Etka does not list the new gel pad for rain sensor, get one from VW for a Passat. Costs 6 quid or less.

Also, if you do not like the sensor's actions, you can replace wiper relay for non-rain sensing version, then you get just normal intermittent wash with switchable time constant.

Costs under 40 quid.

Where can you buy the non rain sensing version and how complicated is it to replace?

Thx dieselV6 :-)

Here are the relay numbers http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/222509-windscreen-wipers/page__p__2634537__hl__rain%20sensor__fromsearch__1#entry2634537,

You can get them at any VW/Seat/Skoda/Audi dealer, curiously enough for me Seat always seems to have one in stock (got them for both Octy and Superb).

To replace, remove lower dash panel (4 screws), then pull out old relay (192) and put a new one in (389 or 377), replace panel, tighten the bolts. You can do this on a coffee break

Looks to have sorted itself out. Immediately after install I could see a couple of small bubbles between the gel pad and the glass / sensor, and these have gone over the last two days. Though I must say the reliability of the sensing in these is nowhere near as good as in newer cars - my last one a C3 Picasso - and so I might be tempted by the relay swap in future.

I've just seen there are LOADS of 377 relays on ebay for around the £10 mark...

Thanks mate. Sorry for asking, but replace what panel? I found the relay and all, very easy. :-)
