brake pedal "soft" or "spongy" after liquid change

Featured Replies

Hello there,

I'm the owner of a Skoda Superb BPZ 19TDI PD, 115BHP, Euro 4.

It was time for a brake liquid change and the dealer did the job. After this the pedal is very soft compared to what it was before this change.

After seeing this and asked if they used a pressure system to change the liquid . Their answer was NO.

Did they screw things up here and let the air inside somehow ?

Could it be that the ABS pump has air trapped in so an ABS pump bleeding with VAG-COM is necessary ?

How to solve it ?

Best regards,

Ovidiu

Doesn't sound right.

I would be asking if they can bleed it again.

It shouldn't feel softer after a bleed... if anything it should have a better feel.

I always find you get better results with a pressure system like the Eezibleed.

You also have to make sure the handbrake is off and you don't touch the brake pedal. Also have you asked if they bled the clutch too?

No, they didn't bleed the clutch.

they used "old fashion way" to bleed it : press the pedal, release the bleeder screw at caliper body. I'm not sure if somebody checked the bottle level during this process or this was empty at some moment and air was drawn inside.

You have to bleed it i'm sure.

The system is not bled correctly, bleed brakes and clutch again.

Thanks for your replies !

Do you have some links/docs where these bleeding procedures are described ?

Is ABS pump bleeding necessary at this point ( with VAG-COM) ?

I want to go back with the bleeding procedures and ask them to do the exactly what is written there. ( and hopefully with a better results this time)

no VCDS needed, this is for later cars, mk2 octy, mk2 superb.

Use pressure bleed kit.

I use uncharged (ie air hose not connected) Gunson kit bottle and a vaccum pump, but similar results can be obtained with just charged (air hose connected to partly deflated spare) Gunson kit at a sensibly low pressure (~+1bar).

Speed bleeders alone usually won't bleed well enough, as they tend to leak tiny amout of air back in via outer sides of bleed nipples when the brake pedal is released.

I have had good results using the Gunson bleeding kit and the spare wheel partially deflated. Very easy to use and gets all the old fluid out without the risk or air in the system.

Definitely need to get them to do it all again including the clucth (it uses the same fluid as the brakes so part of the same system).

You will probably find it will improve all on it's own as the new materials find their levels, if not your servo is rotted out, look at the bottom of it for rust.

So, here is what happen next :

I contact the dealer who did the liquid replacement, discussed about these problems and they told me that I have to buy a new bottle of liquid and they will change it again - free of charge. WHAT ??? Its you who did a poor job for which I already pay...so why should I pay again ?

That's not going to happen ...

So I filed a complaining report to the main Skoda dealer explaining them the entire story. Next day I got a call from the dealer that worked on the car asking me to go again in the service to solve the problem , free of charge. They changed again the liquid completely, bled the brakes and this time the clutch also, did a brake performance test , ... All this time the garage manager was with the 2 mechanics supervising all the work they did.

Then asked me to check it to see if the problem is solved and if I am satisfied with the end results.

And this time I was. No more "spongy" brake, no difference compared to what I was used with.

It seems that if an upper authority is involved things are slightly different.

So, a happy ending after all, but this could be avoided from the beginning.

Thank you guys for your advices and support !

Ovi
