Wonky rear coilovers

Featured Replies

Recently fitted my new coilovers only to find the passenger side rear coilover makes the car easily 1cm higher than the rear drivers side. I have tried letting it settle in but to no avail. The car is fully down but with both adjusters in and as low as possible. I have tried everything i can think of, jacking up and taking the springs out and putting them back in etc etc but have ran out of ideas.

Has anyone experience this? or got any solutions? Im all out.

thanks in advance

Make sure both springs are the same on the rear, they should have markings. A visual check should also help make sure they have same amount of coils same length and same thickness.

Did you notice the car sat higher on that side before coilovers?

Top mount fitted correctly?

I have carried out a basic visual check but after sending this reply ill be going out to do a more indepth one and to look for said markings.

I cant say i noticed before the coilovers which is annoying but sadly i took no notice and im pretty sure the top mounts are fitted correctly.

Failing the above its the car at fault ie rear beam has been used for jacking or something similar.

It is parked on perfectly flat ground when you're looking at it, isnt it?

yeah it is on level ground, even been out to various different points to make sure, checked tyre inflation and have just taken the rear springs out and swapped them around making sure everything is identical both side (it is) including both springs being marked the same and the top mounts, its appears the rear beam must be at fault which brings me onto another question, what can be done about that? Also in the mean time can i highten one (drivers) side to get the gap in the wheel arch level?

Yeah you could but that cars going to act strange under load as the suspension on the back is going to be under different tension.

Rear beam replacement is the only solution if its bent mate. Sorry.

appreciate all the help above :) last question before i go and cry into my pillow, how much will i be looking at for a replacement beam, fitted?

It's not the fact the diesel tank is on the drivers side is it and compressing the spring?

The spring appears to be free but I hav left it for today, I'll search and double check tomorrow. Cheers

Won't be the tank. 100% of people with coilovers don't have to have one corner set higher than the other. They should virtually be set the same. It's a issue for sure.

sounds like its been jacked up by the spring cup then and bent it.

Switched them side to side? If it's the spring itself, the problem should migrate to the other side. If not, something bent or possibly wonky rear beam bush?

Rubbish both my fabias had to have the rear cups adjusted differently....

My 6N2 polo had this problem, the rears were independent and fully adjustable so it was easy to fix. I put it down to cheap coil overs, as there was simply nothing else it could be.

What brand do you own?

My fabias had kw v1's on one and vmaxx on the other

My mark 4 golf was the same on weitecs! Also my lupo gti was the same on AP

I have the same problem but for me its the drivers side that is higher. I base it down to cheep coilovers :)

Yeah they are cheap coilovers, jom budgets, quiet the difference from the teins on my previous Celica lol. Yeah I moved the springs over and the problem stayed at the same side, rear passenger still being higher. think when I get time I might go back to adjusting the drivers to make it higher.

I think that's your problem mate, cheap coil overs.Have you tried switching over the struts to see if the problem lies there?

  • Author

I havent tried switching the struts, do you think this could be worth doing? to be fair im all out of ideas so i think when i get up after work tomorrow ill give it a try and see whats what, thank you :)

Turn the thread on one of the rear cups up 5mm....

Job done

  • Author

Jase will not effect the ride in anyway? Im assuming cant be any worse than driving along in a wonky car lol

Also will 5 mm be enough to account for about 1cm difference?

Edited by sie_gt4

5mm on the thread will lift the car more, likely around 1cm.

Its a case of trying it out to see. At 5mm there shouldn't be any effect on the ride.

Cheers I'll give the 5mm a try and see where I end up :)
