Replacing brake fluid

Featured Replies

Wanting to replace the brake fluid as it hasn't been done for about 4 yrs.

Do I need to replace the fluid in the clutch system as well or do I just bleed each caliper until fresher lighter coloured fluid emerges?

Using the Gunson eezibleed system so hopefully should be fairly straight forward.

Thanks for your help.

You need to bleed the clutch too, depending on engine, access to clutch bleed nipple is either hard (4-cyl engines) or very hard (2.5 V6, 2.8 V6)

In theory no you don't need to replace th clutch fluid. It will have no effect on the brakes what so ever, if may improve clutch actuation but if there is no problem with that then I'd suggest leave it alone.

I agree with the above.

Clutch fluid does not run at high temperatures and does not degrade. Given the lousy access to the slave cylinder on the B5.5 and the possibility of breaking the fragile plastic pipe connections I would leave well alone. I bleed the clutch only when renewing the clutch assembly itself.

If you accidently break the slave cylinder connections on a 6 speed transmission the whole lot has to come out as the slave cylinder is co-axial with the primary shaft. Crappy idea in view of the access - why complicate what was a perfectly sensible arrangement with an external cylinder and lever?

Thanks for the replies.

I'll just do the braking system as the clutch is fine.

Oooh, I'm glad a proper car man has said that, stops me feeling that I've been taking the easy way out over the years!
