Speedo refitting

Featured Replies

Hey-ho.

Having just bought a new Felster, I'm slowly working my way through all of the niggling problems.

One of these problems was the fact that the airbag light on the dash didn't illuminate as it should when you first switch on the ignition. It also didn't light when i disconnected the connector just under the steering wheel leading me to believe it was hence a blown bulb behind the dash. So I took off the dash surround, but I have no idea how to pull out the speedometer?

Do you also have to take off the whole of the top of the dash off? I'm slightly confused because the workshop manual seems to say that the speedo should just pull out to a degree, but it seems that the speedo cable and perhaps other gubbins are limiting its movement?

And thanks to my noobishness, I've managed to destroy my self-cancelling indicators and the plastic notch things on that seat the bottom of the speedo on the dash surround. :drunk: Bugger. Oh well, I'll be having a field day down the scrappie in the near future

Cheers, JJ

I usually pull out the black dash surround complete with the speedo/clocks assembly complete, and then replace the lamps (or do whatever) with the entire thing out. I've always found it easier to do it by removing the steering wheel and the column surrounds. I know there are those who say you can do it without, but I've never managed it without a lot of swearing and it being a PITA....

The bottom white plastic tabs habitually break off where they go into the black surround - the white bit is made of really brittle plastic and breaks for a pastime, alas. I've seen a fair few 'fixed' with screws, which seem to work well enough...

Ah right. I did take the steering wheel and its shroud off, but the problem really is reattaching the speedo to the surround those clip things. I never even got around to changing the bulb cause I just can't pull the speedo out far enough at all.

I managed to get my Clocks and surround out without removing anything around the steering wheel. Involved a lot of time and swearing and a few cuts here and there....

Once the large surround is off and you have the clocks loose you should have enough room to get behind and unclip the speedo cable. There is only one thing to 'press' and it will come away.

It allows for more movement and room to remove all cable links and the clocks come away :)

Ohhhh, I see. I thought it would be kinda like a motorbike where you have to unscrew the speedo cable with a pair of mole grips. I'll check it out in a bit then... off comes the steering wheel... again. :dull: Cheeyaz! :D

Sorted! Easy when you know how. Could do with a few stubby self tappers where those flimsy plastic studs were though, but I'll do that later on me thinks.

Good show!

Removed the dash the first time it took me 2 hours to remove and get back......

Had to do it again and did it in under 30 minutes ;)

Definately easier when you know how!

+1 - it can be done with some pain and patience.

It can be... but it's easier and quicker just to undo a couple of screws and one nut!
