is my turbo on the way out

When I accelerate sometimes I get a slight loss of power for a split second it feels like a slip in something but I can understand it. If I put it in neutral n rev it the turbine sounds like it slaps at top end??

well this evening i was driving up the dual track at about 50 in 5th accelerated up and i had a complete lul in power, the turbo didnt come in it was just running without it?? bloody cars! Could it be anything to do with the air flow sensor?? I left this off once when i changed my air filter by mistake and its the same kinda effect are they prone to failing please

yeah its the 110 tdi 2004 model. Having it scanned for faults would that show anything to do with the turbo itself? As for cleaning the turbo would this be something i can do myself or would it have to go away for specialist cleaning

You can rule out the mass airflow sensor by unplugging it - if the car runs better with it unplugged then that is definately the problem, and it needs a new one.

If it's the sticky vanes problem it should be showing the fault code 17965 if you fault code scan it:

I think you can do the cleaning yourself if you're comfortable with taking the turbo, EGR and manifold off. One of my mates did his in an afternoon although I don't know whether he took the turbo right off or cheated by spraying it with cleaner in situ or something.

Mat, been lookin at ur gallery. Was it easy enough to strip ur turbine clean it and put it back on... also what does that blanking off do?? Plus elephant??what is that white pipe uv added how do these mods effect the car??

Getting to the turbo is a little time consuming - inlet manifold need to comes off first, also you need to be careful with your oil supply pipe too. In my case all the bolts and studs pretty much behaved themselves so it was an ok process. I did have a second pair of hands to help which was an added bonus at times. The short oil return pip was the hardest bit.

Once the turbo was off, the actual cleaning process was pretty each - there were 3 bolts to remove to open the turbo up. Resassembly requires a number of new gaskets (inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, and turbo to exhaust pipe).

The elephant mod is the white pipe - it vents the crank case to the atmosphere (ideally via a catch can). This prevents the warm oily air being circulated back through the intercooler and the EGR back into the engine. The EGR blank prevents the small amount of recirculated exhaust gasses being recirculated back into the engine. These black sooty gasses, when mixed with the warm oily air = black mess in the EGR and inlet manifold = bad.

Therefore the best solution (in my mind) is to stop them. The cat might be slight less environmentally friendly, but the turbo should stay cleaner, and as a plus point, I have had my best ever emission test figures come MOT time since doing this. MOT rules used to say (they might have changed now?) that the EGR must be fitted, not that it must function.....

Overall affect to the car - I can now overtake and not suffer the dreaded limp home mode occurring.....

I would go for the MAF. I have had 2 1.9TDi's now. My old 90BHP had the MAF go twice, a slight blip in power then complete turbo loss. Stop, restart the engine and its back up to power. I put a 2.0 petrol one on it and it ran sweet and never died after that. Apart form when the fuel filter needed changing. I run my cars on WVO so get though filters quicker than a whore gets through those funny extra large water bombs.

Anyway, now I have a 110 L&K and had the same... tried the petrol MAF and get an emissions warning on the dash, but no loss of power. Just got to figure out why the petrol MAF gives the unfeasable signal error on the 110 and not the 90.

Thats just what I found after many a lost night sleep over potential turbo failiure.
