DSG software update - turbo needs shimming

Featured Replies

Took my car in for the DSG software upgrade which is on a "fix if the customer identifies a problem" status at the moment. While in, they identified my turbo as one from a batch that requires shimming. This apparently was upgraded to recall status on Monday so whether it is a "wait until you are next in or until you go into limp mode" type of thing or whether they will actively contact customers I don't know. My car is from June 2010.

I did hear of issues with a certain batch on the 1.2 tsi engine... cant remember what it was about though....

I *think* this may have been the batch that seemed to have massive issues with excessive fuel consumption (ie around 25mpg). I was told by my stealership that they were getting a lot of reports of certain batch of cars getting reported as being over 20mpg off the stock figures but the problem hadn't been found yet - and yes mine was one of the said batch.

That is interesting because this morning in a loan car I achieved better mpg without any particular effort than I normally get in mine driving like a Mavis!

"fix if the customer identifies a problem". and the Identified problem is............?

Hesitation mainly

This rings a bell my car was an early June delivery, built early may. Someone on here got a car same build week as mine and the Turbo went on that while he was driving home from the dealers I think. Another one from the same build week went after about 2 weeks.

The problem probably is yellow warning lights epc and engine and then the engine runs without turbo just like the 1.2htp engine. The problem is caused by wastegate's faulty valve - flange (or something like that). This problem is common mainly in early 1.2Tsi engines where turbine code ends in F. There are many polos suffered that problem. Newest engines has their turbine code ending in G. BUT still some cars develops that problem. In first 1.2Tsi engines where the problem occured they used to replace the whole turbine - waistgate - inlet manifold as they are all in one part and cannot be changed separately. Newer solution is the replacement of the wastegate's valve - flange (or something like that) followed by an ECU update.

My car licenced at June 2010 and thank God I don't have any problem and I hope it will keep this way because I am running out of warranty (3 months left)

The dealer said that the issue is now a recall so whether it is UK only or worldwide I don't know but it may be worth a call to your dealer in case your car is affected but hasn't showed itself yet.

Thaks Fatbloke, I also know that there is a campaign (this is how my dealer named it) since September, that refers to timing chain issue for some specific 1.2Tsi engine early batches. In some cases timing chain went loose or jumping one or more teeth, something that drives the engine to a failure, he also told me that my car is not included.

By the way, my board computer informs me that there are 42 days to 30.000Km or 2 years service, so as soon as I visit dealer I will ask them and then I will report here. But if any other member has any piece of information is kindly asked to inform us too.

I had this turbo issue in January on my Sep 2010 Fabia 1.2Tsi DSG - yellow warning a workshop message came up, car went into limp mode etc and dealer said it was something to do with a shim that needed replacement. All fixed but I can't say the hesitation is any better - still put my foot down and nowt happens for a couple of seconds. Hey-ho. Dealer says there is no other problems with the car so I presume "they all do that sir" is the message.

It may be worth asking again. I picked up my car last night and the hesitation at junctions, roundabouts etc has gone. I tried to force the conditions that cause it and couldn't make it go into 'having a think about it' mode. I don't know how recently this fix has become available but I would recommend pursuing it with your dealer.

Mine is around the same build so may need this.

Although i am still waiting to put it in for the oil scrapers on the pistons haha!

The recall only effects the 1.2 TSi.

Update: I don't know if the difference has come from the turbo fix or the DSG update or a combination of the two but it has significantly improved driving. It is now the car it should have been. It is smooth, always in the correct gear and marginally more economical (although I need to run at least 1 tank to be certain). I no longer need to use sport mode to ensure smooth progress over fast roundabouts or in traffic. It seems slightly more powerful, this may be one for Tech1e, does the fix on the turbo correct a boost leakage fault?
