Felly windscreen

Featured Replies

Well..... I was happily driving home from university today and a big ass boulder comes flying towards me (No bigger than a 2 pound coin lol)... BANG... left a small hole... I was disappointed that there was a mark and not 10 seconds after that the window goes bang and there is a huge ole crack :(

It has been needing to come out for a while now anyway to fix a leak that keeps coming back on the passenger side.....

Does anyone know of a place local to Ashford, Kent to get a cheapish new/ln windscreen and rubber seal? Ideally want to do it at home to repair any rusting points on the panel under it ;).... Best to go to Skoda dealer and get their quote or someone like Autoglass?

FYI: I won't be insurance claiming it ;)

Lee.

That's just rotten bad luck there, chance in a million.. although I did that to a brand spanking new windscreen a few years ago which really pleased me no end..

With Most insurance companies a windscreen claim won't affect your insurance and you will just pay an excess fee fr the job quite a lot of the new glass screens come with a new rubber seal, but if not they are only about £12 from the dealer if I recall.

Hi Lee, sorry to hear that mate. Mine went the same way last year and 3 weeks after replacement the same happened again! In both cases did it pretty painlessly though insurance. My view is it's about time I got something back from years of paying in. Good luck with that.

Bit of a bummer.... But hey it's life lol.

Don't think I have windscreen cover as I'm third party only cover with admiral. Will check after work @ 1.

Sent a company an online quote request last night and got this reply today;

SKODA FELICIA (89/00) Registration Number R*** **J Manufactured In 1997

            Net       £140.00

            VAT      £28.00

            Total    £168.00

That includes them coming to me and removing old and fitting new.

Seem like a decent enough quote or shop around still?

For supply and fit that doesn't sound too bad to me. When I booked my first replacement with Autoglass I was advised that the screen, if purchased direct, would cost in the region of 400 to 500 quid! Not sure how accurate that really was but it expelled any doubts about not going through insurance. You're probably right but it's still worth re-checking your policy.

The other option could be to get one from a local srappy and fit yourself. Less cost more hassle.

Bah that quote fell through...... They rang me after work and said they are based on the south coast and won't travel here.... Ah well...

Checked my policy and I'm TPFT but no windscreen cover and phoned to double check.

Methinks I'll pop into my local Skoda tomorrow and sort out a new rubber and see what they quote for a new glass... *sigh* .... I'll also check at a scrappy and see what quality a used WS is

Hi Lee, I've found a site that looks promising and suggests felicia replacements from £90.

Probably worth a look/chat with them before going too much further.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hey Lee did you get sorted? Our Lad has just got a big chip in his screen and has the Admiral no glass cover policy too.

Assuming "from" £90+VAT probably means £200 plus has anyone DIY fitted a second hand replacement Felicia windscreen? The Haynes manual seems to think its beyond the capabilities of the home mechanic but surely it can't be that difficult?

hi, i fitted a second hand one, its easy if you take your time, run a string around the rubber, use a mastic nossell to put string in rubber, i used grease on the rubber its a bit messy , start at the bottom centre,

So its not a bonded-in screen on the Felly then? (The car isn't here at the mo)

hi, no not bonded, sit in the drivers seat put your feet on screen & push hard it will break but you will kick it out , clean your rubber very well making sure you dont leave any bits of old sealent or crap in the groves, cut the rubber on the screen you removing from the breakers, or just ring an independant window fitter to fit it for you,,

Its a fairly simple job as said they are just held in by the rubber, if you find a good screen second hand then cut the rubber from the outside with a shard stanly knife and push it out gently, use some decent 3-4mm thick string/rope in the groove around the rubber and start it at the centre of the bottom, do a couple of inches each way ,

we usually drill a small 4mm hole at the bottom of the windscreen apature each side just at the lowest point so any water runs away into the engine bay rather than breaching the rubber and leaking inside the car.

have fun they can sometimes be tight to fit with new rubbers so we use tyre soap but anything slippy will help.

Not sorted it yet.... Haven't really had time with being busy with uni :D

Fitting won't be a problem as my dad will be doing it and was a mechanic for 18 years with Volvo and Renault.... No worries there :) .... He refitted his Vitara windscreen with a secondhand one at home :)

Ideally I wouldn't like a secondhand simply because of the quality of the screen (wiper scratches, dings etc) which is what this one had but hey... A student has to finance ;)

I was going to source one near summer as I wanted to fix this leak issue in the passenger side but it has to be done now... And I can see the crack getting bigger each time I get in it (luckily its going down and not across right now)

Well got a reply this morning from smile windscreens and the quote is;

The cost to supply and fit a clear windscreen to your Felicia will be £90.00 + VAT = £108.00 and a new rubber will be £15.00 + VAT = £18.00.

Altogether £126.00 includes supplying, fitting, VAT and us coming to Ashford, you pay the man at the time of job either cash or credit card.

Think I will accept that offer ;)

As an all in cost mate that's not half bad + you'll have a new screen fitted with warranty. Encouraging when a company actually supports what they advertise to do.

Got a quote from SKODAUK and its definately cheaper just have to do it yourself so If anyone is interested in buying glass or rubber and doing it themselves it is fairly cheap from SKODAUK

NEW WINDSCREEN

- CLEAR £80.76

- GREEN £97.16

- GREEN WITH EXTERIOR MIRROR £114.63.

RUBBER SEAL

- £18.59

ALL PRICE INCLUDE VAT 20%.

ALL PARTS NON STOCK, BUT CAN BE ORDERED.

Lee

I prefer RAC windscreens, but that's always been on fully comp. Might be worth a ring to get a price.

Hi Lee, are you sorted yet?

Hi Lee, are you sorted yet?

Ordered from SkodaUK at the orbital park 2 minutes from me: £99 total. They said it would be in either yesterday or today and they would call me.

No phone call so I will contact them tomorrow once I have got back from university to hand in my dissertation.

If it is in, going to take the old one out, repair any rust, make some holes to stop any future leaks and then refit the new window!

Lee

I'm still looking for a used screen....anyone know of a likely donor in a scrapyard around Portsmouth?

I rang Silverlake in Botley but they said they don't do windscreens. Not sure what all that's about?

They were suggested a few weeks ago when I was looking for a quarterlight glass.

Hi, that sounds like a plan but for the sake of around £20 I'd probably have opted for the agreed fit option. Hope it goes well and like me watch out for future flying projectiles!

Haha student on a budget :)

If I went fitted id need time to repair any rust on the scuttle etc and to see what is causing the leak. Self fitting means I can do it at an own pace and have the car off the road for less time!

Went into Skoda and the part wasn't in... Was dispatched on the 22nd but never arrived.... Grrrr

More waiting... Can't see the crack getting any bigger at the moment lol

Yeh, makes sense if you're doing the extra bits and bobs at the same time. Keep on their case.
